I was wondering if anyone remembers this famous and super game from the past. A small group of us formed a small club, Donegal Subbuteo Club, in Letterkenny a few years ago and we've had 4 subbuteo tournaments (nothing serious) from Jan '12 to Sep '13, but nothing since. A small club has also be formed in Strabane.

It would be great to hear from anyone who might be interested in meeting up in a local venue once a month to arrange games for the winter months.

I rediscovered this game back about five years ago when I came across a book about it in the local Dunnes Stores. I hadn't played or heard of it in nearly 25 years! I then came across an old pitch and two teams, Liverpool & Celtic, in my attic at home. I also came across a small notebook in which I kept a record of our leagues and cup matches, 1984-1988.

I googled subbuteo and was delighted and astonished to see that it was still alive and well, particularly in Britain and was very big in parts of Europe. I began to buy some of it on ebay and have a few things collected once again. I've learned since that there are a lot of different bases you can use for the players but that the games is essentially the same.

There was quite an active Subbuteo movement in Ireland in the 80s but like everywhere else, videos games took over. But a group of lads rekindled that movement about 10 years ago and still hold national championships.

The following are all useful links to anyone who might be interested in the game.

    Or just simply google 'Subbuteo'.
