My daughters 152 Fluence (25,000km) had a clean fuel filter light on the dash, the main dealer invoiced her €90 for cleaning water from the filter and a reset with a note to monitor, the light has come on again, surely the filter should have been replaced, or am I missing something.

You're right. Any other course of action is lunacy as filter still needs to be done shortly after.

All dealer to replace filter and take 90 euro of stands fuel filter charge. Then find a new mechanic

She had water in her fuel filter ? Diesel ? Tell her to change where's she s getting her fuel from ... at most it would be 20 Euro for a replacement filter and suck up water with a pump and clean with a rag 20 minutes of work.....if someone charged me 90 for a wipe of rag I'd be cranky

It's pretty common for condensation to happen in diesel fuel tanks which is why most diesel filtering systems on cars are fitted with drain taps to the filter housing which allows to drain this water.

I remember reading an article a while back which said it's very important to keep the least oxygen possible in a diesel fuel tank by keeping as much diesel as possible. If you're constantly putting a tenner into the tank and driving on the orange light then you are more prone to condensation.

€90 is pretty bad for a garage to just drain the water. I would have expected them to also change the filter at that price to be honest.

Most mian dealers charge a flat rate diagnostic fee, this is also the minimum price chargeable, it's generally the price of an hours labour.

That's what it sounds like what happened here; car booked in for a warning light on dash, the issue was found not to be a warrantable item. Standard diagnostic fee applies, they found water in the diesel filter, drained it as a matter of course and the issue was rectified without any addition charges.

You'd hardly buy the Fluence fuel filter in a main deal for €90, they are €69 iirc.

Same problem next day, back to the the dealer, drain tank replace fuel filter, €400 incl the original €90.
The best bit is the fuel retailer covered the cost.

Would this not be covered under warranty

Consumable items are not covered by any warranty. Filters, tyres, brakes, clutch, bulbs etc
