Hi, I have a good few ash trees on my land. They would be over 50 years old at least. Really huge. They need to come down anyway. Would they suit for hurley making? Would a miller be able to advise ?

good ash trees for hurleys are usually trained to grow with a curve for the butt of the hurley. One of the teagasc advisers is very interested in this, maybe give him a call.

Hi, if you still have the ash tree's I'd be interested in buying? The ash must be growing in a woodland or a grove, ash growing on ditches are not suitable for Hurley's. If you could PM your number that would be great.

If you dont mind me enquiring, why are ditch grown ones not suitable?

The roots don't form properly for hurley's on a ditch, roots grow straight. When we need curved roots going around the base of the tree, minimum three prominent roots per tree.

I think they are probably too big. Ideal age is somewhere between 20-30 years, but depends on the site. I'll PM you a number as well.

Hi, One of the trees is really huge . Its at a ditch but it more of a case of it is the size of the ditch. Would the huge branches coming from it be of any use?
I have a few other ashes also, not so old, may be suitable. I could take pics and message them to you perhaps?
