Dublin Bus 53

Does anyone know does the 8am departure make it to the ferry port in time for the 8.45am ferry?

Since the 53 is to serve the ferryport it's bizarre that the buses aren't timed to coincide with individual departures (and arrivals).

The earlier departure is at 7am, which is too early for trains arriving into Connolly on the Maynooth service.

It has a 30 minute running time so I wouldn't risk it.

The 53B (Irish Ferries Private Hire) leaves Busaras at 07:15. I'd go with that.

The main purpose of the 53 isn't to serve the Ferryport per se but rather to serve the East Wall area and to bring workers to/from the Docks area.

I'd imagine that for the very reason that the 53B operates the 53 is not timed to meet ferries.

Fair enough about the 53B being designed for the job. But if my train is running say 10 mins late I won't be able to get from platform 7 in time. I'd prefer something not quite as tight.

Well then I suggest you get a taxi.

€14 last time. If I was happy to take a taxi I wouldn't be asking about bus options!

With respect in the second post I gave you all of the bus options.

In the event of you missing them (which is what you asked in your next post), a taxi is your only fall back.

    I can't magic buses that don't exist!! ;)

There is the private Stena line bus leaving Westmorland Street at 07:15 as well. Costs €2.50.

The Irish Ferries and Stena Line depart from different terminals which are 20-25 mins walk apart.

The 53 is not specifically designed to serve the Ferry Port, as already mentioned, it is a service for East Wall and the docklands, terminating at Dublin Port. From using the ferry occasionally I know the arrival times can vary depending on weather and other conditions. Having the bus wait around for a ferry would cause many problems for the other users of the 53 further into the route. It is a timetabled service and should run as so. The 53B, while not perfect, is a dedicated ferry bus service operating with the arrival and departure times.

I would say they are no more than 10 min walk apart.

If the OP is arriving into Connolly then if he can't make Busaras for 07:15 he's not likely to get to Westmoreland St for 07:15 either.

I found that bus for the Stena terminal useless when I had to come into Dublin off the first Kildare line train. The Taxi men must love it because I too was suckered into giving them business because of the impossibility of getting to Westmoreland Street in ten or twelve minutes.

First train from Kildare gets to Heuston at 06.38, at a decent pace you'd walk to Westmoreland St from that.

They did say Kildare Line - I wouldn't assume that it was the first train from Kildare Station! That term tends to mean trains serving he intermediate stations.

That train doesn't serve Sallins or Hazelhatch which the next train does - I suspect that's the one they're talking about which doesn't arrive until 07:00.

It helps when discussing such things to be accurate and not speak in generalities.

It seems to be a particularly Irish thing to do this, the amount of people I have gotten asking for a bus to "county" rather than a specific town is boggling, I have even asked a few if anywhere in the county will do and suggest I could drop them on the border if that is the case; funnily enough a 30 mile walk to their actual destination is not at all appealing.

Donegal is a regular one. Ask for bus to Donegal, buy ticket to Donegal, board bus listed as Cavan-Eniskillen-Ballyshannon-Donegal, wait until it is far to late to do anything about it (usually north of Cavan) and enquire what time bus gets to Letterkenny.

Carrick is another one, ask on bus going to Carrick on Suir if it is for "Carrick" then chances are you will get taken there, ask for Carrick on Shannon where you actually want to go and you stand a better chance of not having your day ruined.

Yes. That was the first train of the day for me.

GCD train will be earlier, 07.07 Connolly, 07.09 Tara St. Bit of a jog might just make the IF, Stena would need a flat out run I'd think.

The outbound terminus for the Stena bus always seemed slightly odd to me. The inbound bus serves Connolly and Busaras, but the outbound doesn't.

No chance of integration I suppose as passengers are supposed to wind themselves running.

They drop off at Connolly but certainly do not at Busaras, finishes at the Westmoreland St Stop. I believe that stop is used because Mortons are the operator of the service and they already had a stop at that location from Circle Line days.

Integration into what though? Both the Stena and 53B are privately arranged by the ferry operators to suit their own schedules, considering how low down the priority foot traffic is to them there is little more that can be done than accept what they provide.

Busaras isn't exactly a taxing walk from Connolly. The rest is a bit defeatist for my liking but impossible to argue with that level of acquiescence.
