At the weekend two of my friends were jumped in an unprovoked attack.

All covered on cctv, assailant was arrested and brought to court where he got bail.

He was over in Ireland for the weekend and I would imagine went home as soon as he got bail.

He has already done time (18mths) in the UK for similar.

What are the chances that he will see a court date in Ireland?

Depends a lot on the seriousness of the charge.

If he does not answer his bail then the court will be approached for further action such as a European arrest warrant. There is a cost implication in executing such a warrant. If, as you write, he has previous convictions this might weigh in favour of a warrant being issued.

His details will be retained on the Pulse system here and, if thought necessary, on the UK PNC system using an Interpol Notice.

One reason for you to take some satisfaction from this is that the offender will spend a good few years looking over his shoulder waiting for 'the tug'. Leaving the UK on ferries or flights puts him at risk of arrest and I know through personal contact that people in that position sometimes wish that the matter had been dealt with at the outset.

    TT
