    Looking in Harvey Norman and soundstore I'm confused. What's better, macbook, air, pro? Some retina and some not, some with Ssd and some with HDD. I'm new to Mac ans utterly confused. I don't want to buy an older gen one, I'm looking for the newest gen and don't want to get stung because I don't know what I'm buying.

    What I need it for, web browsing, watching videos, storing photos. Nothing major. Also don't want a dog slow one, so something mid range maybe? 11" or 13" of the latest model. Suggestions??

    Retina = high quality screen
    SSD is approx 10 times faster than HDD.

    Depends on your use case. If you're writing documents you don't need retina displays and an ssd will boot in seconds and use cloud storage. If you're a photographer you probably need retina but probably need the larger capacity hdds.

    Thanks for the feedback. I'm more looking for advice on what specific model to buy...I'm not sure what model is 2012 or 2016.

    Look at the apple site. Everything is there.

    What ever you do, make sure it has flash storage or SSD. The Mac OS is painful to work with on SATA drives.

    If you can wait about 3-4 weeks there are rumours of new models being announced. Take a look here for recommendations on buying in general http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

    Your use case suggests the macbook air might suit

    Have a look on apple Refurb store as you will get a higher spec laptop a lot cheaper.

    They are just returns of macs and in a different box. My own 15 inch retina is one of them and it was new never turned on when i got.
