Speeding fine scam

    Hey All,

Not really sure where to post this but thought here might be a good place to start. Got a call yesterday from a Dublin number (not sure if I can post here) claiming to be from the law dept of my car insurance firm asking if I had received a speeding notice in the mail. When I replied no I had not they proceeded to tell me it must have been lost or something.

This person never checked my name or any of my details and never even mentioned who my insurer was (all of which set off alarm bells.) When I asked for more details on these points (dates of incident, location etc.) I was given some guff about the line being bad then a couple of secs later she continued to start to tell me that I had been clocked speeding @ 105kmph in a 50kmph zone in "a city" which would result in a fine of 680 euros and 2 penalty points.

As I was at work I didn't have time to string her on any further or try to get some more info out of her so decided to cut my losses and end the call.

If there is no issue with posting the number here I can add to the post later but thought it might be worth a heads up.

Thanks and sorry for the length of the post!!

Reeks of a scam to be honest. As far as I know you'd never be contacted by a third party for speeding. Shouldn't you get the fine in the post?

But seeing that you had your head screwed on by asking her for further details (did you ask if they knew the reg?).

I'm guessing they want you to pay the fine over the phone? I'd report the number.

@ me_irl Yeah I was thinking the same myself, not sure who I should report it to though?

Would report it to the Guards as they are illegally impersonating a body that is trying to extort funds.

    Link to numbers: http://www.garda.ie/Controller.aspx?Page=3430&Lang=1

I was thinking ComReg, but this link might have more information too - http://www.consumerhelp.ie/scams

it's a prank call not a scam, my daughter did it on my wife, exact same details, towards the end of the call the caller asks if you are the registered owner of a "series 6 bmw", if you let it play on, it ends by laughter as she explains that you have been pranked.
The person who set's you up for the prank can then play back the call to you so you can listen to your self getting angry with a recorded call.....

yep, its a prank. I got the same call around 2 weeks ago. Coped it wasn't real straight away when the call came around 8pm, and as the person said they were from "your insurance company", and was a mobile number.

Just to alert people that it may be back doing the rounds. I got the exact same phone call ten minutes ago (same 'speed' through the same zone, same fine and same make of car) and when I corrected them that I in fact drive a different car entirely, the woman laughed, said 'imagine someone pranking you' and hung up.

    Quite odd

It's a prank done by some clown who finds it funny, they then call a premium rate number to listen to a recording of you on the call. If you find out who did it put their mobile number on the back of every toilet door you can find.
