F10 BMW 520D Auto 2010 - Jerk when Stopping

Hi, Looking for some help with a F10 BMW 520D Automatic. My car is in good condition, always serviced on time by authorised BMW dealers. 120K on the clock. Occasionally when I brake to almost a stop, there is a sudden jerk and then the car stops. Im not breaking suddenly. It almost feels like another car has bumped into me from behind. The same can happen when parking, back and forth in a tight parking spot can be difficult because of the sudden jerk in both forward and reverse gears. Anybody come across a similar issue?

Do the revs of the engine drop as if the car is about to stall?

    No. Revs are OK.

Sounds like the lurching gearbox issue. It was common enough on the e53 but haven't heard of it on the F10. Could try a SW update or a reset. Sorry I can't be more help but search for transmission lurch and you'll get more info.

I will search for transmission lurch. Thank you your suggestion.

Was the auto transmission fluid and filter ever changed on it? Is that 120k km or 120k miles?

@bazz26. 120km on the clock. I was told the transmission fluid is sealed and bmw won't change it by a bmw dealer. The filter has never been changed.

BMW say this but it's nonsense.

Fluid and filter should be changed regardless. In my experience, low fluid will lead to it holding onto gears but is unlikely to cause this problem.. still worth changing though to rule it out and from a maintenance perspective..

Guibo joint is a more likely culprit. Definitely worth getting the latest SW update as well as that has fixed it for some..

You could also take it to a transmission specialist for a full diagnosis..

Other option is to just live with it which many people do..

I have E65 730i with 120 KM on, my transmission (gearbox ) will make a thud or a clunk if I brake hard to a stop from speed but normal driving is fine. Sometimes I might hear the same noise when engaging a gear if I am parked on a slope. I don't believe it is a sign of imminent failure.

I have been having the "sealed for life" debate with myself for a whilst, I believe it's a messy job for kerbside mechanics. However I have resolved to use genuine ZF fluid if I do it.

Had the same debate with myself for a while before eventually biting the bullet and doing it..

Messy enough job but not difficult at all..

I've done it on a few cars now and never had any subsequent problems..

Used BMW fluid the first time, lifeguard (ZF) every time since at a fraction of the price..
