    Hi,

Went to the dentist earlier, unaware of the PRSI free check up rule.

I asked them at reception if I needed a PPS number and they said no. I asked them about the payment section, and they told me what to fill out. I told them about not being at the dentist in a couple of years, but nothing.

Anyway, I paid and only found out about it after... I went back in but they would not refund - seems bad form.

Is there any way I can claim back??

    Thanks

Are you qualified for a free check up under the PRSI dental scheme? Not everyone one is, you have to be paying PRSI contributions for a few years before you qualify.

Is the Clinic participating in the PRSI scheme? Not all do, some are fully private, it is up to you to check before you book an appointment.

The PRSI dental scheme only pays around €28 per check up, most clinics charge more than that for new patient examinations, if you were seen as a private patient, there is no obligation to refund your fee and accept you at the lower PRSI rate.

Op, it is up to you to check if the Clinic accepts PRSI scheme patients and to inform them at the time of the appointment of you are qualified for a free examination, most clinics will check that for you but some will not as it can often take quite a while on the phone to get through to the dental section of the Dept of social welfare to check if you are qualified whereas if you provide that info in advance, it can be emailed/faxed to them a couple of days before you attend.

Still it's bad form if they don't refund you, but it is possible that you may not have been qualified or they may have had to send a form with your details to the Dept for assessment, in that case you would not be refunded until the Clinic recieves confirmation that you are qualified.
