Legally obliged to a phone line?

Trying to get a phone line into the house. Eir sent out a subcontractor (NMC) to put in a line but the poles have been buried outside the house and there is no duct coming into my place. The NMC lad said it'd cost a few thousand to shut the road in order to dig a trench into the gaff. I'd have to foot the bill.

I heard on the radio after (or possibly misheard) that every house in the country is legally entitled to a phone line. Is this true?

The house owner has to cover the cost of an ESB connection and a water connection.

Is it not the same with a phone connection ?

Eir has to pick up the first €7k which I suspect won't be the totality of the cost if the road has to be closed, ducted and then reinstated.

Eir are legally entitled to supply only Fixed Cellular Service if the costs are over 7k. no broadband available with this service

this has Eir covered from a USO perspective

Very interesting guys - any chance of a pointer to the relevant legislation etc. please?

Don't go to too much trouble, just if you have any names et al. Google will no doubt do the rest!

    Thanks in advance!

OP There's satellite broadband if all else fails.

From the comreg link earlier in thread

The concept of Universal Service is to ensure that basic fixed line telephone services are available to end users at an affordable price. The scope of universal service is defined by the 2002 EU Directive which was implemented in Ireland by the European Communities (Electronic Communications Networks and Services) (Universal Service and User’s Rights) Regulations 2003 – S.I. No.308 of 2003. These regulations were amended in 2011 – S.I. 337 of 2011.

Comreg has made big changes to the USO recently, incl. reducing the 7K down to 1K I think, unfortunately.

There is more info on this thread

Yeah, i was looking into the satellite broadband and from what i can see the providers in County Galway all have data limits on it which isnt really suitable.

I stream a lot and download games over my unlimited data mobile package on 3, but it's extremely slow. Looks like i'm stuck until 4G comes to my area.

If you push it they'll offer AFL over radio but its PSTN only, no broadband.

IIRC there is a provider who switch off the cap between certain hours. So you could keep your steam updates to then and buy DVDs, I dunno like you live in the sticks :D

Seriously though I know what a pain in the arse it is. On caps though isn't the cellular capped - they usually are.

If you have a 'proper' address you might try getting a new line provide through Sky. You'd have to buy TV as well though.

There's no cap on my download limit on the mobile. I've often downloaded 50 gigs worth of a game over a few days. Ridiculous carry on.

There's actually fibre broadband in the town, but there wasn't a phone line going into the house for a good few years. In the recent past they buried all the phone lines underground, but because there was no phone line into this house, they never dug a trench into the gaff.

    Pain in the hoop.

Is there not a wireless service you can use. The likes of Imagine LTE. Satellite should be a last resort
