Question re bank holidays and working abroad over them

Hoping someone could shed some light on a particular matter for me.

I was out of the country (Hungary) for 3 months earlier this year and worked over 3 bank holidays. (Paddy's, Easter Monday and May BH). While there, there was one public holiday so I didn't have to work.

My question is : As I am entitled to the 3 holidays I missed here while away, is the company correct for docking me one of those days for the day I had off while observing another countries holidays?

Hope someone can help clarify the situation.

You're hoping to get both the public holidays in Ireland and the country you happened to be working in at the time?

I've been in similar situations and I try to swap the Irish public holidays for local ones where possible. If there are more Irish public holidays than local, then you are still entitled to those extra days - so I suggest taking them as holidays, or else asking to be paid for them.

So yes, I believe your company is broadly correct to take one of the Irish public holidays. Expecting to get both sets of public holidays is not fair IMO

Most European countries have more public holidays than us, so it could be to your advantage to opt for the foreign ones.

I'm fine with them taking holidays here to cover the day I had abroad - I just wondered about it as a previous job I had gave both the Irish holidays and allowed the foreign holidays too.

I guess there's no actual "law" about it - maybe it just depends on how the company deals with it!

    Thanks for the input.

Yes, this sounds correct to me. Perhaps they could have shown some good will given you're travelling on their behalf.

But that just means you can get docked more leave. I am pretty sure that you don't get to choose your entitlement based on where you are at a given time, but you can ask that instead of taking off the Irish public holidays, you can take the local days off instead.

e.g. instead of taking St. Patrick's day off in country B when everyone else there is in work, you can work on the 17th March and use that accrued day to take off on a local holiday instead.
