    looking for advice

i have been missing a bull for 10 days now.
10 months old black and white simmental.
he was in a field with 11 others and can find no signs of a breakout - as well as barb the boundary is mains electric fenced and the bulls wouldnt go near it before now.
i have checked all the neighbours herds but no joy
i had been hoping with blind faith it would turn up but its been 10 days now and i am beginning to think it has been stolen
it just seems strange that someone would go to the bother of stealing one, like why not take them all??
anyway what is the procedure for notifying the department? and do i have to involve the police? (i am in the north)
    anyone have similar problems?
    any advice greatly appreciated

Surprised you haven't notified the police already. Have to notify the dept as well.

Don't know the procedure. Call into the office I suppose and they'll tell you what to do and fill out some forms.

I suppose you're absolutely certain he's not somewhere on your land, in a gripe, under a hedge, in a drain etc?

An ad on Donedeal might get the word out.

Also, it would be no harm to put an ad or two in the local papers. I mislaid a weanling a few years ago - asked everyone I could think of, walked fields etc, etc etc. Put an ad in the paper and a lad about 3 miles away contacted me as he had a stray. Neither he nor I had signs of breakout/breakin but it was my beast.
Of course contact the dept and police as you will need to generate enough paperwork to drown in, but don't give up on word of mouth at the same time, you never know.

The procedure down here is to notify the Gardai and give them the approx day and time of going missing and the animals tag number. Then get them to stamp a signed letter with the same information and send that into the Dept.

If the animal doesn't show up then the Dept has been notified.

If he does show up, the Gardai know who it belongs to.

It will probably be similar up north.

At this stage, chances are it has been stolen/died and you won't see them any more:(

    thanks for the advice.
ad in the newspaper and done deal sounds like a good idea - i did put it out on facebook but not all the older farmers have access to that !

was hoping not to involve the police but i guess there is no way round it..

The PSNI? Don't worry,it's standard enough
You'll have the animal insured so a police report will be needed for that anyway
For EU payment inspections, you'll also need it and for tb testing

i have no insurance didnt realise there was such a thing

yes the psni, for all the good it will do. enough hassle and heartache losing an animal without them and the department burying me to the balls with paperwork

a cattle dealer down the road from me told me to always report to the guards and department if an animal goes missing.

His reason for it is that he was at the loss of an animal.
A calf went missing. couldnt be found and he didnt report the animal missing.

A number of months later, the animal showed up in another farmers herd test a few miles down the road.
as he had been there over a certain number of days (not sure of the number of days), the animal had to be put down by the department.

I would imagine for insurance purposes, you would be better off reporting the missing animal to the guards.

Ah there's no paperwork in it really
The police will just give you a to whom it concerns note to say the animal has been reported missing
You contact the local department ,get a name of who you are dealing with and write a covering note stapling the two together and post that into the department by registered post
Take a photo on your phone of both letters for your reference and keep the receipt of postage

In your covering letter, put. Your herd number name address and the tag number and request it's taken off your herd profile as you have reported it missing or stolen to the police
    That's the procedure
