Went to see this last night on the back of some very good reviews, i must say i was very impressed.

Viggo Mortensen puts in one of the best performances of his career, it was a thoroughly enjoyable film, with real heart and some great laughs.

Really surprised that there was not more chatter on this.

I loved this. Terrific commentary on American/western culture and values, but also just a beautiful, Pixar-like story about a parent trying to do right by his children. Viggo imbues his character with so much warmth, humour and authenticity.

Really liked this film. Can see why it's so highly rated.

Definitely the same level of feels as a pixar.

Top performance all round and Viggo Mortensen showing he can really work in diverse roles :)

Anyone else think about disney starting live action adaptions and Disney/Pixars Brave when they saw the daughter with the red curly hair?

I felt it was very much hamstrung by being an often deeply conventional film about militantly non-conventional characters. Much of the film is delivered as a twee crowdpleaser like many before it, and that significantly undermines it. Tonally it's all over the place too, only occasionally in a positive way.

Which is disappointing as there is stuff to like. It's funny but often truthfully so (as silly as it is, Noam Chomsky day is actually a worthier holiday than some of the horse**** we celebrate). It does go some distance in critiquing the varying ideologies on display, even if I thought as a consequence a few of the shortcuts leading to the ending didn't quite gel. Mortensen delivers a performance that's more assured than some of the scenes deserve. Ultimately, though, it was too uneven and rife with contradictions to really hit the mark for me, although has just about enough of interest to justify its premise.

just watched this movie - i am confused by the ending - I thought that the kids were gonna go live with the grandparents, but in the last scene - they are back in the woods with the Dad - and he says something about them going to school - did i miss something? i am confused..

Also i thinks its a bit odd that nothing emerged from the fact that they took the mother from the graveyard with no follow up from her parents??

The kids run away from their grandparents to rejoin their father. The eldest son leaves to travel. The final scene is the remainder of the family around a kitchen table. They aren't in the woods anymore. It's a house on a farm. The implication being that they've found an acceptable compromise between their values and those of society.
