Hi all I am seeing green hazel nuts I assume are not ready for collection. Anyone know when to collect? I will be using them to grow new trees.

Of interest I plucked 3 completely immature nuts about 3 weeks ago and cracked them open today - completely empty! Does the seed/endogerm develop after the shell?

one trick with hazelnuts when you're collecting them is to drop them into a basin of water - viable ones tend to sink, unviable ones tend to float.

Always found the best time to pick them is when the shell turns a light brown colour, when this happens pick one or two and crack them open and taste to test.

Not ripe until they are literally a hazel colour. Many won't be viable so do the water test first to save a lot of wasted time cracking nuts.
