After the retirement of Pól Ó Gallchóir, his replacement is Alan Esslemont, who filled a similar role with BBC Alba, and played a role in the original establishment of TnaG. Given the budget cutbacks, and continuing falling ratings of domestic channels faced with foreign and streaming competition, it will be interesting to see in what direction the channel moves. Will they follow the S4C lead and go back to exclusively Irish-language programming. Greater collaboration with BBC Alba, S4C and other European channels can't be ruled out (though Walter Presents and BBC Four may have exclusive options over their programming). Alternatively, should TG4 return under RTE management, in a common department with RnaG?

I think RnaG and TnaG should be separate to RTE, with new company taking control of Children's programming (synergies between RTEjr and Cula4) and the proposed Film Channel.

I think when it comes to combining RnaG and TG4, it's often been pointed out that RnaG is radio for the Gaeltacht (ie the community of interest/geographical area), wheras TG4 is a national television station that happens to broadcast in the Irish language. Those who oppose such a measure fear that TG4 would become Gaeltacht television or that RnaG would lose its specific focus on the Gaeltacht and become Radio na nGaelige.

why don't they fear such change under RTÉ a broadcaster with no regional/community niche outside RnaG?
