Cigarette lighter socket not charging my phone.

I plug my samsung s5 into the socket using the same cable I use from a plug in the house, so its not the cable. The charging icon changes and looks like it's charging but my phone gradually loses battery instead of gaining.

I have a Nissan Almera 07, it has charged older phones in the past. Could it be due to the s5 needing more power than the cigarette lighter can provide?

I don't know what voltage the cigerette lighter is even.

The socket is 12V which the adaptor should be able to handle.
You can get an auto electrician to check that it's working properly.

Does the cigarette lighter itself work? If you just connect the charger to the phone but don't connect it to the car does the charging icon appear the same?

Is it a cheap USB / Cigarette Lighter charger? More than likely the output of the adaptor not being enough for the phone, if the charging icon is on.

The really cheap USB's are 0.5Amps which I doubt is enough to power an S5. I've a 2Amp in my car that will add about 5% charge per hour to my OnePlus2, if the phone is locked with Bluetooth and WiFi off (mobile data on), so it's not really worth the effort of plugging it in.

Most wall chargers are 1.6-2.2 amps so I would say something is wrong with your 2 amp one (or as with most things chinese its overrated on the label)

It was a fairly cheap one, but it's also a USB Type-C charger so needs a higher output (old USB in the car wouldn't even show as charging). Even wall sockets at home using other USB/Plug adaptors take ages to charge. It's only the original USB/Plug and charge cable in the office that charges at a decent rate.

You can buy a decent Qualcom 3.0 quick in car quick charger for about STG£10 on Amazon. Get a decent USB C charging lead also.

The other thing to do is make sure the mobiles screen is off.

Mmm. I'm starting to think it might be something to do with the charger port on my phone. I've been trying to charge my phone in a friends house here using a micro usb, it's charging on and off. I'm pretty sure it will still work with a 3.0 usb. I'll check when I get home.

Cigerette lighter works OK. Its strange, phone still not charging in car but charging perfectly at home. Wasn't charging at all in friends house.

It is a cheap adapter but the the voltage looks correct. 5v I think it is. I'll try another a different adapter someday. Thanks

The voltage will be 5v on all USB chargers. The current is the important one here, which is measured in amps. As in 0.5A or 2.0A or whatever.

If there's an indicator light on the charger which is lit, then your car isn't the problem. Given that the cable works on other adaptor, I'd say it's just a basic spec charger that isn't up to the job.
