Dulux have Perfectly Greige in their Moda range.

The only problem I'd have with that is they only do it in 5 litre cans and it costs about 60euro.
How many rooms are you doing in this colour?

Don't forget to prime the walls first in a cheapish white so you won't need as much greige.

We had planned to do most rooms in it! (It's a fairly open plan setup downstairs).

Yeah that's pricey but I'll take a look at it.

    Thanks PANDDDKP

If it was me I'd try and get a good paint shop to try and match Perfectly Greige into a few 10 litre buckets of normal Dulux. It'd cost about 50euro per 10 litres then, as opposed to 60euro per 5 litres.

Not all shops will be able to do this for you though, but the better ones will try.

Try and stay away from 5 litre cans if possible, they're very expensive, sometimes even more expensive than the 10 litre buckets.

Fleetwood Evening Skyline is a lovely colour. I have it in soft sheen in a bedroom and it's gorgeous - warmer than a true grey. I was very happy with the quality too (I favour Dulux but took a chance on Fleetwood because it was on special offer and the colour was exactly what I wanted!).

I'm glad it worked out for you, but I found Fleetwood to be one of the worst paints I have ever used. Both interior and exterior is brutal stuff to work with. It's like glue. It's very hard stuff to work with so I'd advise the OP to steer clear of the stuff.

Dulux and Colourtrend are the best I find.

Dropped into MCRB and very usefull assistant helped me pick out some colors.

He gave me sample cans of Benjamin Moors "Decorators White", "Distant Gray", "Simply White".

They looked nice on the color charts inside and outside the shop. Hopefully they look just as nice on the wall tonight!

Any experience using Benjamin Moore paint?

I've no experience with that paint, but I've read good things about it. I would say it's quite expensive though so beware of that. Did the sales assistant give you an indication of price?

Yes, they are different price levels depending on how you want it mixed i.e. dearest one has something in it that makes it extremely durable when wiping marks/scuffs.

Gave me a price of about €250 for 20L that they can do up. Think that was middle of the range.
The most expensise was about 90 for 5L I think (Dont quote me on that). Buying as 20L they do a good discount.

TBH, my main concern was getting the correct color seen as we are doing the entire house in it.

In the overall scheme of things, the paint is small fraction of the house build cost so I'm not too bothered if it costs €500 instead of €300.

If I go for it, I'll give you exact prices.

You're 100% correct in that the paint is only a small fraction of the cost of a new house, I tell this to people all the time and it annoys me when they land in with cheap crappy paint (if they're supplying) , but 250euro for 20 litres is dear. Plus I'd imagine you'll need more than 20 litres. What size is the build in sq.ft?

If it was me I'd do either one of the following:

    - Use Colourtrend Matt [it's the best paint and it's Irish, it's about 100 euro per 10 litres]
    - Or use Dulux Diamond Coat Matt [very good paint and it's about 75euro per 10 litre]

Both are 'wipe able' but to be honest no paint is really wipe able, you'll always see the scuff mark from the cloth.

Don't forget that grey (and even greige!) is something of a chameleon colour in that it appears different shades in different environments/with different colours , so be sure to test all your colours at home before you dismiss them in the shop, or go with one from a shop!

House is 2700sqft but we are only painting about 2000sqft of that initially.
We were going to leave the ceilings in the pure white spray that was done.
Not 100% sure though after seeing this link as it looks nice on ceiling too.

Spray painter told us about 30L should do one coat if it was colourtrend.

When you say you would use Colourtrend Matt - do you mean take a sample of the paints I got today and get them to match it? (If I pick one of them)

2000sqft is a big area to be painting. 30litres will easily do 1 coat, but if you want it done right it will need 2 coats. I'd say 40 litres will do 2 coats on the walls.

Yes, take a sample of the colour you like, bring it back to the paint shop and they will be able to mix that colour into the Colourtrend bucket. Just beware with the Colourtrend Matt, there's 2 types - Normal Matt which I would buy (95euro) or Ceramic Matt which is a wipe able Matt and it's nearly 120 euro. No need for the Ceramic Matt in my opinion.

And they would definitely match it 100%?
Would be a disaster to pay that money for 40L and it doesn't look exactly alike!

They should be able to ya. People do it every day of the week. At worst it will be a shade off, but it would be hardly noticeable.

If the guy isn't very confident then you'll have to go with your gut feeling, but I'd say all will be ok. Buy 2x10 litres first and see how far that gets you, then get more. Better to buy too little than too much.

I have cornforth White, farrow and ball, and it's a lovely colour! Have it in a couple of rooms! I didn't buy Farrow and ball paint- got it mixed in johnstones. I've heard (since I painted) that johnstones paint isn't great, but I can't say I had any trouble with it, and the colours when mixed were spot on!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭MightyMunster

We have a farrow and ball colour mix too. Amonite. Tried over 10 greys. Think it's Fleetwood colour match, around 80euro for 10 litres.

So we ended up getting 22L of 'Benjaminin Moore White' for €400 (6 Gallons/tins)
    Very expensive, I know.

Looks lovely but coverage is shockingly bad for the price!
One gallon/tin covered about 330sqft of wall.
The walls already have two very good coats of primer/finish in pure white matt from Dulux.

It will need a second coat.

We are going to get it colour matched for all upstairs at a cheaper price somewhere else.

Colourtrend in Celbridge dont have a machine to match the colour, they have to go by eye.
Girl was very helpfull today, two colour samples she suggested didnt quite match unfortunately.

Any ideas where we could get it matched by machine for a reasonable price and quality? Living in Kilcock, Kildare.

The in-laws have used ColourTrend & Johnsons before and said they are far easier to apply and give much better coverage. The Benjaminin Moore was drying in extremely quickly.

Be careful with colour matching. I picked out Farrow and Ball clunch for my hall. I wanted washable paint with a matt chalky finish but the F&B washable paint has a 7% sheen. I ended up having it colour matched with Color Trend Ceramic Matt paint at a very good paint shop. I have the two paints tested on my wall side by side at the moment and they certainly aren't 100% the same. The F&B colour is slightly darker and a more green tone whereas the CT colour has a more brownish tone. I went to two paint shops before ordering, the first one told me that the CT paint matches are spot on and there is no difference. The second one (where i ended up buying) was more knowledgeable and said that CT could never match FB exactly as they both use different natural pigments but that it would be as close as I would get.

If it were me, I would pay the money for the BM paint if you can afford it. At least it'll turn out how you want it to!

Hey Rodge, can I asked where you purchased the BM paint from? McDonnell Paints in Cork did all the matching for us to Colourtrend paint. 30lt came out at about 220E off the top of my head. I think they have shops in Dublin or at least near Dublin too. You can get them over the phone which is how I did the majority of my dealing with them. Very helpful!

    Hey Jentle

We got the BM paint in MRCB in Dublin city.

So in BM defence, the second coat went on much easier than the first and covered a much larger area.
    First coat - 1 Gallon (3.7L) covered around 330sqft.
    Second coat - 1 Gallon (3.7L) covered around 660sqft!

Still very expensive, curious to see how it will stand up to wear and tear.
