Establishment of an Irish Peace Corps?

Probably an off the wall idea, but I stumbled across an article JFK's American Peace Corps (Google it)
and wondered why Ireland with it's long experience of peacekeeping 'and loved by everybody', never had such a civilian organisation?

I'm sure there would be no shortage of volunteers, (over 18, with no upper age limit) and after 3 months training, be willing to serve overseas for 27 months in selected countries, helping out with their various skills, promoting peace & friendship.

Remembering the Euros last June and the hordes of Irish football fans of all ages and occupations, who were so willing to travel, (and were so well liked they got a medal) there would be no shortage, imo, of suitable volunteers from this country for an 'Irish Peace Corps.'
Who would pay for it all?
I've no idea; but our foreign aid budget could be slashed to finance it, and possibly the UN would financially support such a venture?

Just an idea...I don't have all the answers! :D
