    Hi all.

I'm thinking of getting Sky Q but I also want to keep my free to air boxes. I know in the UK you can get a hybrid lnb and sky provide them. Sky Ireland tell me they can't do it.

I'm moving into a new house so will be getting a new dish etc and I want to keep my FTA boxes. Can nyone tell me where I can get a Hybrid LNB and the costs involved.

apparently only sky supply them at the moment! I bet if you cancelled sky might change tune. I have read on a few forums that in uk it can be dependent on the installer. I know the hybrid has 6 outputs. And please note you have to say its for freesat box but as that's not officially allowed here you can see their point.

I can see their point alright. I was hoping as I'm a new customer they would be willing to help supply part number "EL010" with the install. I've not been able to find any info about it anywhere but from Sky themselves.

So sky just rang back to get the package setup. Seems they can supply them here. I'll believe it when I see them installing it. I'll go against my past experience and believe them.

I have sky Q installed and like you I wanted to keep 2 feeds for freesat, when the installer calls you the night before the install explain what you want and they be happy to install the hybrid LNB, I think the hybrid only has 4 outputs (2 for skyQ, 2 for freesat)

    it has 6

    I was under the impression it's 2 + 2, it's good to know it's 2 + 4, thanks.

I was under the impression that Sky Q needed two wideband outputs, so there is also a quad standard LNB output?

    Yes

2 for the sky Q silver box, then 4 standard outputs for freesat etc.

I just has Sky Q installed without realizing I needed to request a Hybrid LNB before install and I've now lost signal on my Freesat box.

What do you think are the chances of Sky coming back out to install the Hybrid LNB? How difficult is it to install myself if I bought the Hybrid LNB from ebay? I'm sure it's not as easy as just swapping them out?

    Should be that easy.

Maybe if you contact the person who fitted the system he might return and replace the LNB with a hybrid one.

Just to follow up on this... I called Sky and explained that my FTA box no longer works. They said no problem and booked an engineer in to come back out & fit the hybrid LNB for no charge. Can't ask any better than that!

I tried calling Sky to upgrade to Q with the Hybrid LNB for a freesat box, and was told unequivocally that there was no way they would fit anything but a standard LNB and that I would be losing the freesat feed. :-(

I hope you declined, wait a bit and ring back.

Yeah, I just said I wouldn't be upgrading if that was the case.

So did others get joy from the Sky call centre or was it only the engineer doing the install?

Just wondering how the monopoly lawyers would view that attitude. Installing a second dish would not be an option in many cases.

on uk boards they state, once you know the engineer who is calling, you ring him/her and tell him/her you need freesat ect and they then bring a hybrid lnb, its got 6 outputs so 4spare.

Yes, but the official position I was given by Sky Ireland after the phone rep consulted her manager was as stated. No hybrid LNBs for Ireland, the only installation option is solely for Sky Q box.

Leave the existing dish in place?

Thought it's understandable if you don't want 2 dishes on your house.

I hope you told them to go stuff themselves and would be cancelling Sky in the near future.

I thought that planning prevented you having 2 dishes on your house? And even if not, that would be something I wouldn't want to look at!

Just wondering how the monopoly lawyers would view that attitude. Installing a second dish would not be an option in many cases.

Sky use X system, punter wants Y system. Sky aren't stopping punter from using Y they just install in such a way as to only support X system. There is nothing to stop anyone from changing it after they leave. A lot of people don't realise Sky's T&Cs specifically state the dish is the customer's property and that's supported by legal precedent involving fixtures, most of which I've forgotten. With SkyQ you still own the dish.

As for answers from Sky - different departments have different options and policies to them. The easiest thing to do is ask the engineer nicely, if that doesn't work just change the thing after he's gone.

My impression of planning law in Ireland WRT satellite dishes is that it's universally ignored, though I did say it might be something you wouldn't want to look at. :)

I had the Sky engineer out last Tuesday and he swapped the LNB for a Hybrid without any fuss. Was gone within 10 mins. Strange that they seem to have changed their policy so quickly.

The engineer gave me a number to call them directly if there was any issues over Christmas. It's 01 8198686. I'd imagine you'll need a Sky account first though!

Why has no-one on this thread suggested going to an independent satellite installer for hybrid LNB? You don't have to always get Sky engineer out.

If you're getting a first time install or upgrade install you have to have the visit. What you do after he's gone is entirely up to you of course.
