New car, lots of brake dust

    Hi,

    I recently moved from a 1.2l petrol to a 1.7l diesel.

have had my old car for 6 years and never once did i need the brake pads changed (main dealer from new) i just presumed that it is because i drive like a granny.

have had the new car 3 weeks and the front wheels are now black with brake dust....

this aint right, going back to the dealership (still under manufacturers warranty)

i probably drive a little faster now (because I can) but i still wouldn't be the sort of driver to get into hard braking situations...

the new car is a lot bigger, more powerful and heavier, that wouldn't be reason enough for the amount of brake dust that I am seeing in 3 weeks though would it be?

The brake pads that are on the car could also play a big part in this. Some pads are terrible for brake dust. If both wheels are equally caked in dust I wouldn't think there's anything much wrong. Your first few weeks of driving a new car are always a bit faster than normal too :D:p

Try using an alloy wheel seal to protect the alloys from the dust, something like Autoglym Wheel Protector...

    Hyundai/ Kia?

The brand and also age of the pads plays a bit part in the dust quantity tbh.

Also if you had say 14" steel wheels with hub caps for example, you would likely see a lot less brake dust due to their nature as opposed to 17" alloys.

Opel Zafira not the sportiest, but i think they are 17" as opposed to my old 15" on the fiesta

    equally caked

Very much normal. If you said you had dust on a single rear wheel or something, that would be a certain fault but front wheels will always have heavy brake dust.

My guess is a new Seat Ibiza 1.7D..... :o

As to echo above, it's more than likely a combo of higher speeds and pads

Well going from a Fiesta to a Zafira you've got a lot more more weight to stop which requires greater braking effort and creates more dust.

You get more dust when pads are brand new.
Some brands are worse than others for dust.

Remove caked dust and keep an eye on the pads over the few weeks.

OP I would be more concerned about the Opel Zafira going on fire than brake dust on the alloys.

You recommend it then? Almost bought some last week.

Yes it's good, will give good protection for a few weeks, very easy to clean the dirt off then afterwards when it does eventually build up. One can will probably do the 4 wheels about 3-4 times.

My wheels get black after a week, I'd be delighted with 3 weeks :pac:
