Intermittent Sewer smell, smoke bomb?

Have an intermittent sewer smell in a house i'm guessing there's probably a bad seal some where in the stack. I'm considering putting a bung in the outgoing sewer and putting a smoke bomb in the access point outside to see if i can spot where its coming out in the house.

I'll be careful with the temperature of the smoke bomb so it doesn't melt anything. Anything else i need to consider?

You can get a leak test done for a few hundred. Would you not try that first and not risk damage?

You will probably need to cap the Vent pipe otherwise the smoke will just drift upwards and out the Vent.

I'm guessing a trap is somehow losing it's seal now and again. Possibly a hand basin, washing machine waste, shower trap, bath trap... etc.

I think I found the problem. In the attic I found the top of the stack was not connected to the flexi coming from the roof vent. The flexi with jubilee clip was hanging beside it. So I reconnected it.

The stack is inside its own cavity which is about 60cm, is there any way to insulate this void? Am planning on dropping some cat5 and co-axial cables before I insulate it.

You may find the flexi, if fixed outside the rigid flue, may seep some condensation under the jubilee clip... been there.. so maybe put some silicon under where the clip squeezes the flexi

Would not insulate the void internally as if u very have a problem......
