Broken item from Amazon

I received a package last week which I didn't open until last night.

It was a large picture frame that had glass. The glass was broken.

I only ever sent back one item, years ago, so I'm not sure if it's still the same process.

But i send them the picture frame again and they send me a new one again. And during transit, it could get broken again.

Does anyone know if broken items has to be sent back to get a refund? Or does anyone know if amazon would give a refund or a discount voucher for the broken glass and you kept the frame? It's worth asking because I'm a proper cheapskate.

I got a large strong plastic type sheet from an art shop and I cut it to size and it works very well in place of the glass.

But i thought i would ask and see if they would let me keep the frame anyway.

Items with broken glass are considered dangerous to ship and they would not make you send it back. It's not a question of "keeping the frame" but of allowing you to dispose of the damaged item safely (if you recycle it, that's your business). The rep will likely offer you a replacement or refund.

Get on to the Chat thing on Amazon and explain what you would like to do instead of returning the item for a refund and that it will save the cost of the return and will add to your happiness with your purchase. They may do it? worst they can say is no.

I got a refund from them. For the whole thing. Not too bad at all.

Dealextreme also let you keep some broken things, you have to send a photo as proof. They offered to send another or give me a voucher. I took the voucher as the item still works fairly OK.
