eBay UK Currency Converter

    Hi,

So recently I've been buying items from eBay.co.uk quite often. (I use the UK site as there are generally more items available than there are on eBay.ie).

Something I've noticed recently is the major differences in currency conversion rates when purchasing items with GBP prices while using an AIB Euro current account.

For example, I want to buy items today totalling £278.99.

If I enter "£278.99 GBP to EUR" into Google, I am told that equals €331.76.

But AIB's FX rate calculator says this equals €321.22.

An post FX rate calculator gives €343.064.

Yet I bought the same items last week for £278.99 and received very similar rates to the above, yet my AIB account was debited by €344.69! (Despite my receipt from PayPal saying I should be debited €333.84).

So my question really is, when I purchase an item off eBay when the price is in GBP, how can I tell for certain how much my AIB account will actually be debited by?

    Thanks,
    Hugo

have you a link to the AIB calculator? are you sure its for credit cards, and does it take into account commissions or "cross border fees" etc.

I am with BOI and have my matercard throuhg them but I have to go to mastercards site to get the rates, and know the bank charges.

Not sure about the paypal thing though, usually I thought paypal will do the currency conversion oand the euro amount is exactly what you pay.

Exchange rates change constantly. If there's news that affcets a currency it can change by1%+ very quickly. then you have the margins that the financial institutions add.
Today the rate has been 1.189 - 1.197. Add abut 2%-3% for commissions and fees and your rate could be as high as 1.24
