    Hi
First time renting a car, need peoples advice.

Renting for 1 day in Uk, pick up and returned to the same location same day.

Cost appears cheap enough, around 20 euro for the day.
I read through the previous threads on excess charge/deposit on credit card etc.

On the website I am looking to book the hire car, it tells me
"Yes, I want to reduce my liability to €0 for only EUR 7.99"

If I take this 7.99 cost out , this totally covers me if anything goes wrong ?

I just want to be sure and covered completely.

    Thanks for your help

It should cover you, there may still be an excess though that you will have to pay, might be first €100 or so, read the terms and conditions.

Yep, that's it and we'll worth the money if you rent for one day.

Deposit will very likely be tank of petrol (@ very excessive price) + rental charge.

Take full to full option, ensuring that there is a petrol station nearby open around the time you plan to return the car.

Different rental companies might have different policies, but the above is pretty much standard.

Edit: Op, is that 7.99 directly with the rental company or with third party insurance? If not, I would buy full cover at the location, even if it is a bit more expensive. This is if complete peace of mind is your priority. Shouldn't cost much more for 1 day rental.

make sure you use a reputable company, read the T&Cs and I have noticed a lot of rental companies now require 2 forms of id as well, one a cc statement. Hertz and Arnold Clark do not require this. a good way to check the T&Cs for most companies is to get a quote on rentalcars dot com and under the pic of the car they have the T&Cs for each provider. If in doubt about any of those cheap sounding deals google the company and reviews. you can pay an extra at the rental to reduce your excess to zero, make sure you make this clear at the desk before you collect the car and do a thorough check of the vehicle for any scrathces dents etc and bring them to the attention of the person who lets you out of the car park and they will mark them on your rental, that way you won't get screwed by shysters.

Thank you for the replies and tips, I had been pricing up the car hire from Ryanairs website, the excess insurance seems to be offered by Axa Assistance, car hire cost + excess insurance paid in 1 total amount.

Anyone recommend a good and competitively priced Uk car hire company out of Liverpool airport/Uk ? Taking the car at 8am or so and returning that evening at 7pm latest.

Nothing fancy, cheap and cheerful to get 3 of us up to Manchester and back.

I see some cheap pricing on moneysupermarket.com etc, just afraid to take the plunge as never hired one before.

    Thanks again for the help.

I had a really great comment here, and deleted by accident. hertz are good, no problems hassle free. My only caveat is they hold 250 pounds on my debit card for two weeks. I joined their Gold Club, which cost me nothing, and each time I hire a car, I've gotten a free upgrade.

Didn't think you could use a debit card.

8quid sounds very cheap for a zero excess. I hired in Liverpool last week. 30€ for the car and 25GBP insurance for a drop from 1200 to 100GBP.

I'd check your figures again but for one day, it's a no brainier to drive worry free. If you're not taking this cover, go around the car very carefully and record any defects on the paperwork as they will scrutinise the car once returned. And I've heard horror stories, the most recent was an overnight UK rental from Hertz where the hirer had to pay 470stg for a new wheel and tyre. Apparently light scuff and sidewall nick which he is adamant was not caused by him. im sure that car has claimed a few scalps over recent months.

Andrew, out of interest, can you link to the site that's offering zero excess for 7.99?

I've heard some scare stories like that about one particular car hire company advertised via Ryanair website. I hired a car through them, it was a limited mileage deal which happened to suit me. They tried to sting me for £90 each administration on 2 parking fines as well as the price of the fines which were both cleared by contacting the parking company directly (both were incorrect fines). They still tried to get the administration fee of £180 but it just so happened that the credit card that I used to pay for the car had expired so they couldn't charge me. After reading some reviews about them, they were apparently extremely good at finding damage on returned cars that wasn't noted at the time of hiring and charging exhorbitant fees for the fixes.

Beware and take photo evidence of the car before you remove it from their premises if you're not getting the full collision damage waiver.

Ryanair offers this when you hire through then. It is third party offer, so not exactly hassle free as you can only claim after paying to the rental company iirc.

    Hi dodzy

It's the Ryanair site which is offering the 7.99 .
    Too good to be true?

I am looking for a small car, keeping the hire costs down for the day and don't want a nasty payout to face if anything goes wrong
    Thanks for your help

Can anyone recommend any good car hire options at Liverpool airport/UK ?

There appears to be many bargains out there but many appear to come with a catch also !

    Thanks for the help.

Yes, of course it is. You'll have to settle the bill for any damage and then initiate a claim to a third party. That's a load of hassle right there that I for one would steer well clear of.

I've priced up many different companies recently for another short hop UK trip coming up end sept. Basically, the worry free insurance is as much as the car hire cost. 2 days with a family saloon will cost me about €80-90 all in.

I went with Alamo a few weeks back at John Lennon. Just a one day hire. Booked a small car and was given the choice when I arrived. Took a Nissan Juke 1.5D (the kids liked the look of it - never been in a jeep before ). Ran it to Cheshire oaks shopping outlet, Liverpool one and down to the Trafford centre and back to the drop off at Liverpool airport 12 hrs later. Just under 50€ including the excess cover. Fuel full on receipt, full on return. Garage just outside the airport on your way back in. No hassle from them. Nice to deal with. They are in the centre under the long term Carpark just across from the arrivals terminal.
