Our son is just 17 and will be getting a license. Father drives a jeep and has commercial insurance and l have a 1.9 car. We had planned to get a 2nd small car and have the father as a main insurer and the son as a named driver. We do need a 2nd car as when I'm working, my husband cannot take the other children in his jeep and often have to borrow my parents car to go to school etc. I went to my broker about it and they said no, we couldn't do that as its called fronting and its illegal. I explained it would be mostly my husband that will be using the car not the son. He will only be learning. She said can't be done. I can get my son as a named driver in my car but my car is a 1.9 and it would be too powerful for him. Is there another way?

I think most companies are going to call it 'fronting' when you already have two vehicles for two drivers and coincidentally decide to get a third vehicle and and put a third 'L' driver on it, even if it's not. Bad timing.

My only advice is to put him on your car insurance for now and get the him past the test. You might find there's not much difference between a 1.9 and a smaller car price wise, as either way, it's not going to be cheap.

Also, you could get the third car now if you need it, only insure the adults on it for now, and when he's got a full licence and a bit of experience, insure him on it.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.
