Can you choose to do 6 year medicine if you're offered the 5 year med?

Hi, just researching courses and was wondering about the setup for medicine in NUIG. I'm doing the 3 sciences (bio, chem, physics) for my leaving and saw that people that get offered medicine and have those subjects are likely to get put into 5 year medicine (ie. skipping premed).

Is it possible to work something out with admissions to let you do the 6 year course instead, even if you have been offered the 5 year course?

I know it sounds stupid but I don't like the idea of being thrown into the deep end straight away when I go to college.

My friend was in a similar situation and she chose to do the 6 year instead of 5 as she wanted to ease herself in gently. I was surprised as its an extra year of fees, accommodation etc but each to their own! Not sure of the mechanics of how to switch to 6 year if you've already been accepted on the 5 year (if that's what you're asking). Good luck with your course- NUI med school is excellent.

You can apply to swap, but it depends on spaces, there has to be people who got offered the 6 year programme who want to transfer to the 5 year programme.

If you skip a year it as other implications. Friend groups have already formed, everyone is a year older, plus there are things covered in pre-med that were not in the Leaving cert sciences.

If you're that confident with the subjects, use it as a year to join societies, meet people, do things.
