RTE Gold will be relayed on RTE Radio 1 from 2am till 5.30am from tonight onwards, I expect many angry oap insomniacs will be ringing Joe Duffy to complain about losing all the repeats of speech programs 😁

It's only 2am Saturday and Sunday night

The rest of the week it will be 3am after a best of that day selection

Shay Byrne mentioned it on Friday mornings Rising Time

i like to see rte gold could take over from rte lyirc or rte radio na Gaeltachta

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,351 ✭✭✭✭Harry Angstrom

They should close the utterly pointless 2FM and replace it on FM with RTE Gold.

Interesting. Maybe that 'emergency backup tape' from a couple of weeks ago wasn't an accident after all.
I'm delighted though. Finally some proper music on terrestrial radio during the night.

It's a pity they don't accept that DAB is dead in the water and put it on FM permanently.

Was good how they fitted in the hourly news bulletins as well so information junkies won't feel too alienated.

I used to go to sleep with Kerry FM when they and a few other indie stations were on DAB, now I listen to 4FM - there's definitely a need for a music only late night station. Though if I can't get to sleep and have to keep pressing the 'sleep' button for another 59 minutes, there's a risk I'll still be awake at 4 or 5 a.m. when 4FM repeats a daytime chat show which sounds like Joe Duffy on acid!

This is great news and a good move from RTE Radio !!!
At the weekends (example Sunday night to Monday morning) there will be music output for as much as 10 constant hours with Ceili House at 9pm, then South Wind Blows, then Country Time, then Late Date, then RTE Gold and Rising Time until 7am!

It seems to be a cost saving exercise...but at the same time getting the name of RTE Gold out there !!.

As the repeats of the speech output are produced and come from Cork, with nearly 30 hours per week of repeats to prepare and relay, now it is just 5 hours per week. Interesting to see later tonight will they repeat a different hour of a show every night or have bits of shows within the hour from 2 to 3 am??
Also, continuity staff announced live the various segments in Dublin ...surely this is saving money. However someone mentioned that hourly news will continue during the RTE Gold relay (will the news be carried on Gold on DAB and Saorview I wonder??). Is the RTE Gold FM feed coming from Cork!!?

Lots of people I am sure will miss the 4 hours of the speech and other programming repeats and I guess these listeners will 'move the dial' to Newstalk or their local station to get their fix of repeats.

By the way, RTE have been repeating their daytime shows overnight since 1995 on Radio 1 when the new RTE Cork studios opened!!

what did they air overnight before that?

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

what did they air overnight before that?

It was just dead air for hours until the signal tones and "O'Donnell Abu" at 6:30am

    http://www.intervalsignals.net/countries/ireland-rte.htm

Same with RTE 2FM until it went 24 hour in 1988, it finished at 1:50 am nightly before then

As far as I remember when Radio 2 (2FM) opened first Radio 1 finished either at midnight or 1 a.m. and relayed Radio 2 until 1.50 a.m.

I think when Radio 2 went 24 hours Radio 1 relayed it through the night.

1.50 - to allow 10 minutes for staff to leave the building before 2am

I thought the presenter based (Evelyn Grant) 'Replay' programme from 2 to 3am was like Saturday mornings "Playback" programme on speed!

It is too fast paced for that hour of the morning.

They should really just replay one hour of a daily show instead and forget about the presenter narrating the clips.

I'm not too impressed with the comments from Shay when he takes over from Gold.
He's been showing the same disgust (can't think of the proper word) as D'Arcy does to An Nuacht.

Can't say I noticed any particular adverse comments on Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday .

He did have a point today that the previous song on RTE Gold was a bit heavy compared tp the normal mix on Rising Time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,714 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

He said one of the mornings that he had a word with "the powers that be" about it. He made another sarky comment another morning but I can't remember what it was.

RTE Radio One devotes way too much time easy listening music shows as it is - Rising Time, Ronan Collins, John Creedon and Late Date. I have no problem with Ceili House, Roots freeway..etc because it's part of stations remit to produce these kind of programmes, but these easy listening shows are a throw back to a time when there was only one radio station in the country. They should have gone long ago.

The only comment I recall any way along the lines of talking about the powers that be was some woman complaining about the change to overnight and him saying the change was permanent

Heard shay say one morning this week that some people enjoyed the company of having the daytime shows repeated

A Cathal recording has just come on now where this should be. 'Tis gettin awful confusing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,820 ✭✭✭FanadMan

Is it a recording? Half heard something about a change to programmed schedule.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,714 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

I think it's a prerecorded filler. It's hard to know with Cathal though as he doesn't interact much with the audience anyway :-D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,784 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

No RTE Gold on Radio 1 this morning from 2 - 6 am, instead as stated above was pre-recorded Cathal introducing and back announcing easy listening songs for the 4 hours. During most links he was saying it was a change to the normal schedule??

Is it an idea of things to come i.e.: a pre-recorded Late Date from 11 pm to 6 am??...and No RTE Gold on Radio 1?

Cathal is on holidays from Late Date at the moment...Fiachna is filling in for him.

But it is music, unlike the garbage on 2fm,Today fm,iradio just to mention three.

Well It was Radio 1 on RTE Gold last night as the prerecorded Cathal went out on RTE Gold as well .

They were even slightly late breaking away from Radio 1 at 6am as we heard most of O Donnell Abu

I wonder is there any connection to the fact that Aertel hasn't updated from yesterday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,784 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Also there was no news on the hour during Cathal's pre-record

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,714 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Seems to be back to normal tonight. I missed the changeover last night. Did the morning person say anything?
Think it's Carol taking over this morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,784 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

I noticed the RTE Gold on Radio 1 music goes very light towards 5:30 am for Rising Time, for example this morning Daniel O'Donnell was being played just after 5 am.

Last night ( tuesday into wednesday ) the RTE Gold overnight service was missing for the second time in 6 days

The fault happened during the 3am news bulletin, last week it was sometime before 3am , when it suddenly cut out and there was dead air for 10 seconds or so and then the emergency tape cut in

Unlike last ( wednesday into thursday ) night they did get the 4am and 5am bulletins on air by literally just cutting to the newsreader and then resuming the song

I have to say the Cathal emergency tape was better than the current tape especially when you hear it twice in 6 days

Tuned in this morning and from 4am instead of 'back to back' RTE Gold tracks, Michael Cahill is introducing a Voicetracked "requested" Gold songs.

This means that the playlist from 4am up to 5.30/6am will be very much restricted with tired, overplayed songs that we hear every day anyway....just like Michael Cahill's Sunday afternoon show on Gold .

The perils of voice tracking and a change occurring after your voice track session the last 2 nights

He's being telling us that Shay Byrne will be presenting it but it was Lillian

Don't know if it's just happened tonight because of the hour changing and Late Date being an hour shorter but the RTE Gold output on Radio 1 is different to that on RTE Gold itself.

Strangely the radio text on Gold on DAB is listing the songs being played on Radio 1. Maybe things will rectify themselves at the start of the next hour. I always assumed that what went out on R1 was a simulcast of the DAB service

Must be a GOLD LEAF service on R1 to celebrate summertime???

No, no room for it even if they wanted to

Since Adian Leonard took over as head of RTE gold the music seems to be mostly 80s, 90s and even early 00s, aren't 4fm and several local stations already in this space ?

Lots of oldies stations have cut down on playing 60s and 70s

I do think though that the requests Michael Cahill plays between 4 and 6.30 am are not for actual people!!!

Anyone know what has happened to Noel Fogarty reading the news on the Radio 1 overnight? seems Bob Powell has taken his place these past few months

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,341 ✭✭✭SPDUB

Due to the UK Election they didn't do the normal RTE Gold on Radio 1 programmes last night (8th June ) due to Radio 1 carrying 5Live til 6am when their own coverage finished .

However they kept the RTE Gold overnight schedule the same length so it ended at 530am as normal and then they played the station identification signal of O Donnell Abu then a RTE Gold Jingle and normal programming .

They could call it RTE Ór, throw in a cúpla focal and promote Irish too.
I never received a response from them when I (genuinely) suggested this.

Thanks. I was thinking it would release frequencies for use, probably get some Euro funding too, for the minority language aspect. Win win.

People who wish for rte gold to become a full-time fm service should be careful what they wish for, if it happened I bet you Karl spain would be doing breakfast and Baz would be doing Drive, Beyonc?s Crazy In Love and Umbrella by Reanna would be regularly played with the sure someone who is 50 was only in their 30s when those songs came out attitude

Who is the annoying female voiceover who pops up on the overnight Gold relay after every few songs saying "RTE Gold on RTE Radio One", she cannot seem to pronounce "One" properly so pronounces it as "Wen".
