Eir connection keeps cutting out.

Currently have the default Zyxel F1000 router unlocked. At random times through the day/night, it'll decide to cut out and lose connection for no reason. I check the lights on the router and they're all fine and showing no problems. I have a spare F1000 that isn't unlocked and have tried it, but there is no change. I've also contacted Eir about it several times and they sent out an engineer once who found no faults.

I was thinking of buying a new router to try and solve my problems. Was looking at the Netgear nighthawk R7000 as its 5GHz and supports more than 20 wireless devices. A possible problem could also be the amount of wireless devices connected to the network, there's about 15~ wireless devices connected at the moment.
Also, connecting to the main Eircom network via wifi doesn't work at all and if i do connect to it, I'm not able to load any webpage. I have home plugs set up to have their own network as well and connecting to that is perfect. Full speeds of around 10-15Mb according to speedtest.net

Any tips/advice? Apologies for the block of text and mess of it all.

    Have you got Eir TV?

F1000 (Zyxel) is vpoor compared to the 2000 (Huawei). Number of attached devices could play a role if all on 2.4.

First step is to check the logs of the existing unit to see if its aware of the issue and logging a reason.

Sounds like you have wireless interference, login and change wireless channel, take it off auto. Get a Wi-Fi analyser app for your smartphone to see what channels are in use nearby.

5ghz will be faster in the room it's transmitting from but it has half the range of 2.4ghz and does not penetrate walls very well.

Yep, they're all on 2.4 and I don't have Eir TV. Have Eir sports through Sky Q though.

Any iOS apps for the wifi analyser? Will have a go at it when I'm back from work. Mainly want the wifi working for downstairs as I have home plugs set up for upstairs that create their own wireless network and they work perfect. Also, would the Netgear R7000 be fine with Eir fibre? Is it as simple as plug and play or is there something I've to tinker with?

Check what channel your homeplugs Wi-Fi uses, it could be killing your existing Wi-Fi. To use the Netgear with Eir fibre you'll have to bridge the F1000, have a search on here, it's come up many times.

I've had the home plugs for about 2-3 years. The problems only started arising about 4-5 months ago. I'll have a look at the bridging with the F1000, thanks.

Just turned on my PS4 there and the Internet cut out straight away. It's connected over wifi. Would that be an indicator of anything? Also, would assigning a static IP to the PS4 be any good? If that even makes sense.

Login to http://192.168.1.254/ and post your line stats here please (downstream/upstream rate, attenuation, snr etc).

    Over ethernet connection.

How you read them (Wifi, ethernet, carrier pigeon) doesn't matter.

They look good but you may actually be 2KM from the cab which would normally leave you with less than that.

    Two probable options:
-Line is unstable in spite of reported numbers, high load causes it to fail
-PS4 is just downloading a bit and consuming all 12Mb (not a lot nowadays)

Watch what the "Internet" light does when you turn on the PS4, does it blink like mad and keep going or does it blink like mad then go off/still?

Yeah, I'm guessing it's down to high load cos the PS4 is only just turning on, no downloads or anything. The Internet light is just blinking regularly. The wifi light switches off though, and all connection - both Ethernet and wifi is lost.

Just found the Nighthawk D7000. Think I'm going to go for that as a direct replacement for the Zyxel F1000.. It's compatible with Eir, right?

It's more likely your line that's the problem not the router. I'd get eir to check it out before investing in the nighthawk.

Had the engineer around last month...told me there was no problems at all on the line. My plan was to buy the nighthawk and test it out. If it didn't work I'll just head back and refund it.

Don't think you can return it in that scenario. It all depends on who you deal with but I'm fairly sure they have no commitment to refund you.

Yeah, I've just bought it anyways from PC world. Going to set it up now in a few mins.

After trying to set this up all day, I'm stumped. It doesn't seem to want to get an Internet connection. I have input all the details given to me by Eir and it doesn't seem to do anything. It doesn't auto-detect the connection either. Have it set as:

    ADSL
    Multiplexing : LLC based
    VPI - 8
    VCI - 35
    Encapsulation: PPPoE
    Login: eir@eir.ie
    Password: broadband1

IP address: Get dynamically from ISP
    DNS address:
    Primary - 159.134.0.1
    Secondary - 159.134.0.2

You buy the D7000 or R7000?

You're on VDSL buddy, wrong settings.

    VDSL2
    VLAN 10
    IPoE - No credentials needed.

That explains it.....is that all the settings that I need?

EDIT: it's worked, thanks for all the help in this thread :D
