The instruction book says use white vinegar to do this. So I assumed it was a special type found in a hardware store but the 2 I went to said go to dunnes and get the white vinegar there. Is it the standard white distilled vinegar in the shops I can use?

Yes, ordinary shop bought vinegar will do the job, I've also used kettle de-scaler before and it also works.
