Access to college email

    Quick query
My daughter has been using her college email ( she attended 2014/15) for all her email correspondence. As far a she is aware it was an email for life deal. However she lost access to this email over last few days. Not sure if mail server is down or her email address was disabled. As she has been using this one for all important stuff ( work, New college application, Susi etc) she cannot get these email. Is there any onus on email providers to keep information for a certain period ?

    Thanks

Is she still attending the college? Why doesn't she just ring up their helpdesk of whatever they have?

(A college providing email for life would be a very odd thing. Most would be for the life of your enrolment with that college only.)

If she finished in June 2015 it's possible the account has been disabled/deleted to make space for this year's first years?

Not sure when some here went to college but email for life does happen. I graduated from Trinity in 2007 and they had it then and I'm pretty sure a number of other colleges do also

Graduated this year, all college provided accounts are gone

Their systems could be down as all the new timetables/student services/noticeboards are updated. Maybe give the college in question a bell and ask if there is nothing about it on their website/handbook?

    Best of luck

Given the time of year that's a distinct possibility

I had thought that the college may have IT issues and did an smtp check and email server is up. there is no portal for students to access email from main website. only way is via attaching to mail program on pc/phone but invalid email is only reply im getting. will ring them on Monday. Any one know what the colleges responsibility for data retention should be incase thay have deleted the email address ?

With NUIG accounts, all accounts go dormant after a period of time (can't remember how long) and are no longer accessible, but still exist. It's far too cumbersome to remove accounts, especially if students re-enroll at a later date as they are given back their old student numbers and accounts are re-activated.

Why this is important is even if the accounts go dormant, if you have set up email forwarding from the @nuigalway account to another mailbox, it will continue to forward email after you lose login access. This may be the case for other colleges.

No emails are being forwarded. Upon testing by sending email to that address is giving error. Important as all her work payslips, Rota info and emails from new college and susi are on it

Best she sets up a new email and starts advising people of it, so.

fyi, this is an issue that comes up on support forums all over the northern hemisphere every September. Ok, so some colleges offer it for life (note - that's life of the college, not life of the person!). Most wouldn't.

I suspect you'd have had to set up POP or IMAP prior to losing access...and even then it would only work if the account still exists and accepts/sends automatic mailing.

Unfortunately this might be a case of contacting all those who have the old email address and asking them to resend any info as well as updating their communication records. Pain in the neck, sorry.

My old uni email was still receiving stuff for almost three years after I left before the address was taken off of mailing lists. Went back to the uni this year and I was told that it remained for life, same with google drive and so on, so this may be a case where it was accidentally made dormant. Best to get in contact with them over the phone and see what the craic is. I'd say it's just an error, it can happen. Sure all my college assignment sheets had my old course from seven years ago on them, so minor errors that cause major headaches happen quite often.

It would be best if your daughter did this. Most colleges won't talk to anybody but the student if it is not just a general query.

There is no onus to keep anything or indeed keep the account running which is possibly a bigger issue here in that anything being sent now is being bounced back. Get her to get on to the college and ask, extremely nicely. Depending on the IT department you may or may not hit a brick wall.

Going forward grab a gmail account or something similar. It's also worth having an alternate, ideally with a different company, for example, hotmail where you can forward anything very important.

TCD is not just email for life, but also unlimited GDrive storage (though I suspect the latter is only for the life of their deal with Google).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭sullivlo

I have DCU email for life and TCD email for life. However I know that RCSI cut you off after a year. Best to contact the college to see.

Edit: in previous jobs I would get a warning of account expiration. Did she get a warning? Also what college? Someone might have experience.

Some colleges only offer their email for life if you graduate. You only mentioned one year here so if she didn't complete her course that may be the cause.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,438 ✭✭✭✭endacl

    My TCD is for life.
    My UCD wasn't.
    My NUIM was never used.
DIT was in the dialup days.

Depends where you went and when you went there...

UCD has email for life now, also.

OP - worth contacting the college's IT department - they may be able to restore access (if even only temporary, to forward existing emails etc.).

Just as a question to all the e-mail for life, are they all a gmail service through the college.

    Doing a tour?

Yep. Only DCU left to do in Dublin. Then I'll start picking up the ITs.

Not really though. They were picked up as opportunities to do so arose over about 20 years. I'm probably done now. Can't see the point of a PHd as I've no ambitions in academia.

Most colleges "for life" is for graduates only - not anyone who left. That is likely to be critically important here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,435 ✭✭✭✭Mrs OBumble

Thinking about this some more overnight: I strongly suspect that "for life" actually means for the life of the college's commercial agreement with Google Apps, which may be shorter than the life of the college.

Both of the universities I graduated from offered email "for life" when I enrolled, both have since revised that agreement and email accounts expire in the year after graduation.
