Worried about my JSA application

    Hi,

As the thread title says I am worried about my application for JSA. It is now over 2 weeks since I had my assessment with Intreo and I've heard not a sausage from them. I was told during that assessment that I didn't qualify for JSB (cheers self-employment) and that they would assess me for JSA. Is it normal not to hear anything for this length of time? I'm especially worried because not only have I been made redundant but DH is out of contract and as of last week and won't be meeting with Intreo for a couple of weeks. That will be 4 weeks at least with no income for me and then however long it takes them to assess DH. Can I phone anyone to enquire as to the status of the application? If they refuse it can I appeal? We've never been in this position before where both of us are unemployed and we're quite freaked out and worried so any advice welcome.

I should add that we've both been applying for jobs like mad with very limited success even getting to interview stage which adds to the worry about the lack of information on the JSA application.

Not sure of how fast they are currently, but back in 2010 when i was redundant, it took me 3 months to get my first JSA payment. That was 3 months of ringing them at least twice a week. Had to go to CWO in the end to get emergency payment as Welfare don't seem to grasp that bills don't stop when employment does. Hope you get sorted OP but in my experience, they are completely incompetent and inept at processing these.

Three months is a long time to wait for payment. I'm not sure who I should ring to find out about the status of the application, who did you contact? Was it just the phone number for the local office? God almighty we'll be in serious trouble if we have to wait three months.

I rang the local office constantly, and was always told it was "with the deciding officer" every time. That job title must be an inside joke, who takes 3 months to make a decision when that's your sole job to perform?

I won't lie, they were the worst 3 months of my life. Had utilities and companies hounding me for a payment, and a couldn't care less attitude from Welfare when I was practically begging them at one stage to give me a payment.

I sincerely hope it's not the same for you.

Go back to your Dept of Social Protection office and apply for Supplementary Welfare Allowance.

If you have no income, you may be entitled to the basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance. If your weekly income is below the Supplementary Welfare Allowance rate for your family size, a payment may be made to bring your income up to the appropriate Supplementary Welfare Allowance rate.

If you have claimed a social welfare benefit or pension but it has not yet been paid and you have no other income, you may qualify for basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance while you are waiting for your payment.
