Why did my iPod Touch go dead?

My iPod Touch suddenly died a few minutes ago with tons of battery still remaining.

I plugged it in. No response.

I then Googled the problem and someone suggested holding down the Home button and the On/Off button at the same time.

I did this and, after about 10 seconds, it rebooted.

It seems to be working ok now.

But, why did it die in the first place?

    Thanks.

    D.

Ps. It's fully up to date.
