Ive noticed this year the price of jdm cars eg ek9 type r civics and the likes have gone up in price by quite a margin.

I bought an ek9 in around 2010 for 4200euro cash now on donedeal ek9's are making around 7k on average ir seems.

What decides the price hikes and falls?

Do you see the price of these cars rising or will they drop again?

I'm surprised to her at all that they have risen given the current situation with insurance. Actually I'm surprised that insuring a 15 year old Japanese import performance Honda Civic isn't illegal now at this stage.

Ya i was also suprised considering the cars have had an extra 6 years on irish roads and that outside dublin the economy isnt brilliant still especially jobs for young males. The majority of these cars are insured through insurance companys third party extension loophole id imagine.

I'm not so sure about this at all. Maybe it depends on the model? Integra Type R(DC2) prices have dropped and are about the lowest in the world. A couple of grand cheaper than the UK and far cheaper than buying one at source in Japan(even before taxes are added).

And even at those prices the adverts for them stay up for many months on end. There's also the advertised price and what they actually sell for. I'll bet at a significant enough loss. DC5's aren't any better, though I suspect in the long term they'll end up very much the poor relation of the DC2 in the classic market.

That's the R, the basic model Integra is even cheaper. The 1.6's are easier sellers for obvious reasons. That's if you can get a half decent example of any of the above. Finding anything like stock can be a needle in a haystack time. Most have been Riced or Halforded to within an inch of their lives. If you can get one close to stock and at Irish prices then IMH they're a "bargain" and a near given "future classic". They're already one in the US where mid milage stock examples in excellent condition go for 20 grand and more. Even really ropey ones get 10k plus.

Maybe Civics of the same era are different? They were a more popular car in standard trim. I have seen an EK9 R being advertised at strong money, like over 10 grand money, but IMH the seller is a passport holding citizen of LaLaland. They were and are a rarer car, but the modding mania has hit them hard too. Stock is very hard to find. That K20 engine swap may look like a great idea, but in years to come will be major killer of value.

It's getting harder to find good quality jap cars so the prices for good ones are going up. Add to that the fact that the economy is improving and young lads have more disposable income, means that these types of cars are going up. They were rock bottom a few years back, probably the cheapest place in the world to buy a used jap import, so in reality they are just going back to their actual market value.

Supply and demand same as every other market.
The economy is on the up again, people have more money than the lows of the recession.
Also many of them were scraped or sold for parts when people were stuck for money.

Still pretty much is. The market is still mostly in the lower end pricing young lads car bracket. It's on the up and they're fetching way more than most generic secondhand cars of those years, but for most models it hasn't started into the "older geezer with money wants car of his youth/classic" market segment yet. Like for example the earlier Ford Cosworths and Delta integrale etc(the latter gone skywards since Americans have "discovered" them).

    Take this DC 2 R

Lovely yoke, well sorted. But coming from the youngfella market end. The older guy or classic type would likely faint at what they did to it. Two dozen made in that year, the very last of the model and now it's not the original colour, wrong seats, wrong wheels and seems to have had an engine swap with whale willy aftermarket intake and third party exhaust, etc.

The Irish market is a funny old thing though and I suspect the JDM stuff will take more non originality as classics.

Never mind the Irish prices, the prices in Japan are also on the rise across the board for anything performance related, but especially Honda's, hence the lack of them being imported over the past number of years. A lot of what's here on the Honda front that was imported years ago has been messed with or ragged at this stage, and lad's are still asking strong money for them trying to compare it to a fresh import. Eg a clean good grade EK9 out of Japan will cost you 12/13k cleared to collect from the port ex vrt and I dont see the price dropping anytime soon either

The local market is pretty slumped by comparison alright. I do know two English lads and one Northern Irish lad who bought JDM cars from here in the last year. Saved a packet over UK prices(and paid a good chunk less than the donedeal ad asking price too). They had to do some digging to get halfway decent/stock examples though. As you say most have been riced or ragged. Apparently rust was quite an issue even with otherwise clean looking cars, but not nearly as bad as in the UK.

Asking price and selling price on Donedeal are often world's apart.

I'd say a lot of lads chancing their arms

+1. I've seen the same cars come up month after month after month not sold.
