I invited family to the meal so yes, I paid. For Confirmation I put on a spread at home. This worked out cheaper, but was more work. Family were great at bringing dishes/desserts which cut down greatly on prep.

I've always paid for whoever came to ours, but we only always invite grandparents and Godparents (with their partners/children). My husband's sisters invite everyone but let you know it's a carvery and you pay for your own.

If you invite people to a Communion meal, then you pay. Guests presumably give gifts to the child, so they certainly don't expect to pay for a meal to which they've been invited. If you can't afford it, then ask the number you can afford or have something at home, if that's possible.
