Budget Golf Stores

Hello thinking of upgrading me set of clubs except the few golf stores I've been to seem to only sell top of the range sets 1000 euro etc.. I'm not looking to spend that much. Maybe around the 450 - 550 euro mark.

I've been to mcguirks and American golf.

My current set are Ram and only cost 280 I think about 8 years ago. They served me well and still in great condition but think it's time to upgrade.

Why don't you buy decent second hand ones?

Ye, second-hand or upgrade them gradually, ie irons now, driver at xmas, wedges birthday, etc. Also, you may get better deals once October arrives and less people are playing/buying.

Is there any stores that do second hand or are you on about buying from the likes of adverts.

There is usually a selection of second handers in McGuirks but you might be better off visiting the pro shops at your nearby clubs.

A good set of used clubs are a great idea. Adverts, Done Deal, golfbidder.co.uk or even www.callawaygolfpreowned.com, although you need to be aware of freight and duty charges with Callaway. You can get some great clubs and deals on any of these but get help from someone who knows clubs so as advise on model and pick the right shaft, shaft length, lie, etc to suit your height, swing speed, etc. If money is an issue and you are serious about your golf then I would stay away from cheap new clubs and go for good used clubs instead.

Haven't been in there for a few years now. My recollection is that it's a quaint old school type of shop run by a very pleasant man called Michael. Maybe it's been modernised but doesn't seem so from the outside.
Definitely catered for the budget end of the market with Ram and Benross type of stock as well as pre owned. Some expensive sets too.
I really liked it when I was starting out before I got all snobby about my equipment ðŸ˜

I bought a set of lovely forged Mizunos of eBay US last year. 4 to GW, brand new in wrappers (unboxing felt fantastic), but a 2012 model. Couldn't care less, nicest clubs I ever had. Sex on a stick and they're not some crazy blade or anything, normal enough cavity backs, just not supersize. I had a choice of 5 different shafts, too, so I had a local fitting session (€50) for the shafts before I made the purchase (albeit with a different head). Cleared the lot for under €400, tax paid and all, total of €450 with the fitting and I absolutely love them.

Good job. The fitting was key so smart move. I have no problem with getting clubs from a few years back; in fact I think clubs depreciate faster than cars and the difference is negligible to the average player.

I would favour getting a quality (even if used) brand over a shiny new cheapo - as long as the spec works. So buying from a club pro or a fitter in a reputable shop would be my preference.

Jesus that sounds like a savage purchase

The other option is when manufacturers produce a new model and the old ones get discounted. A couple of years ago I got a set of Taylormade Speedblades that cost me just under €400. Got to try them out first and didn't need fitting.

Also since Nike have just dropped out of the game, their clubs have gone through the floor. Have a look online for the bargains, sets that were €700 are now under €400. Golfbidder in the UK have the Vapor Combos for £299.

I did something similar got a set of muzino mx300 that were a couple of years out of date with the project x shaft I was fitted for from the state's. They were brand new cost me 350 or so.
3 years later 4golf couldn't improve on them.

Second hand or old model and new is the way to go.

It was and it was really easy too. Some commercial US sellers on eBay do the duties & taxes to Ireland thing right from the checkout these days. Couldn't be happier. The ones I got were the JPX800 pro btw.

I'm a real cheapskate golfer tbh. ;) These were the first clubs except for the putter I bought from new. Before that and all my woods today still are from adverts. I don't see any difference between what I have and what others have tbh.

I'd like to have a fitting done, I wouldn't have a clue what type of shaft would suit me. I usually just go by how they feel to hold in the shop. That's one of the reasons I'd like to buy from a shop, wouldn't like to feel pressurised buying from a private seller.

Not a huge fan of buying anything second hand either. Nothing better than having brand new clubs

If you can get out to Celbridge, shop at the driving range often have quality stuff at reasonable prices. The lads there are really helpful and know their stuff. They do all repairs, shaft swopping , grips etc. Bonus is that you can try the clubs on the range before buying. Have a look at their Facebook page The Golf Studio, they post good stuff for sale there.
