Door Handle Problem

I am a complete novice so here goes.

I had a problem with an internal lever door handle. One lever was floppy so I removed both sides in order to find the problem. The spring on one side had snapped. I ordered these online (along with a circlip pliers) as I couldn't find a source anywhere in Dublin. The spindle fell out so I popped it back in and used a pliers to open the door if it did close over while waiting for the delivery.

My problem is that the spindle has to be rotated anti clockwise in order to pull the latch in and open the door. Its the opposite direction to how the handles rotate the spindle to open it normally.

I've replaced my spring and that is good but is the latch broken or have I missed something? Any help is welcome as I'm learning as I go.

    Thanks

Are your handles not just on the wrong way round? As in put the handle on the other side.
Surely the spindle would turn clockwise or anti-clockwise depending on what side of the door you're looking from

Yes, you are right re the direction of the spindle rotation from each side of the door.

These are existing handles and door latch which worked prior to removal of the handles and which can only go back on the way they were originally. It isn't possible to put them on the wrong side of the door without noticing. The levers when depressed will push the tongue in the latch out a little bit rather than pulling it into the door. The only thing I changed was a broken spring in one door handle which shouldn't have impacted the latch itself.

Sorry, I may have been confusing when talking about the direction of rotating the spindle which as you say depends on which side of the door you are on!

If there are any carpenters out there who know about fitting door handles maybe there is something very obvious I don't know about.

    Problem solved.

I took out the door latch and opened it up. A piece of metal inside the latch had snapped. It just happened at the same time as the spring in the door handle! So yes I need to replace the latch too.

I had a quick look online. Does anyone know where to search for a latch that will fit the existing hole in the door? Online or a shop or ????

    Thanks
