Looking for a golf course between Adare and Killarney

Playing golf on Sat 1st Oct in Killarney. On Friday I'm picking someone up in Dublin Airport @ 10am and driving down and need to be in Killarney about 8pm. The plan is to play a round of golf on the way down.
1st Option. Originally I was thinking of some where like Palmerstown House or The Heritage. But that would mean hitting the Friday rush hour queue in Adare and adding 40 min plus to my journey.
2nd Option. Drive straight past Adare and then play golf and then drive the remaining journey. Does anyone know a course that might suit? Maybe I would play in Adare as the main delay is before you get to the golf clubs.. I think Adare Manor (Hotel) course is closed. Does anyone know what the Adare Manor Golf Club is like?
3rd Option. Drive straight to Killarney and play golf there. Definitely would work fine but not my 1st choice as it doesn't break the journey at all.

Some great courses in Killarney, but I understand that it's a long drive down. Maybe a course in Limerick? Castletroy or Rathbane?

Haven't played the other Adare course so I can't help you there

If you want to get through Adare first, then I'd suggest Dooks or Tralee. Slight detours but both well worth it.

Unfortunately both are the "wrong" side of Adare. So if I played there I would still end up in the Adare Friday night traffic tail back.

Ardagh has a nice course ( Newcastle West Golf Course) nice clubhouse etc and not off the beaten track too much.

Ya I'd recommend Tralee. You will be going through Castleisalnd on your route which is only ten minutes from Tralee and Tralee is one of the best links in the country. If green fee costs are an issue for you, Dooks might be a good alternative as it is cheaper but a bit further off the beaten track.

Adare is fully closed alright. They are stripping the whole thing out and renovating the whole lot. Serious work going on there.
From what ive heard id be surprised if the everyday man will get in there again. Well not that easily anyway.

I havent played the small Adare course so couldnt comment on that.

If i was you id play the Heritage/Palmerstown/Naas/Curragh and tip along down the M8 and go by Mallow and take Adare completely out of the equation. More or less the same distance to.

Castleisland golf course is a good test but it is very hilly, so much so, that we came in after 6 holes and hired a buggy for the rest of the round. It was an enjoyable round nonetheless.

Adare Manor is a very average course. If you want to play in that area then Newcastle West would be a better option. Dooks and Tralee are two very good options also. You could also stop off in Ballybunion and play the Cashen course (only 30 min from Abbeyfeale which is on your way).

Open comp in Beaufort on Fridays, just outside Killarney and it's a fine track, worth a visit.

Unfortunately traffic through Adare is very heavy from about noon on Fridays.

Castletroy and Newcastlewest are good courses in the Limerick area and not much of a detour.

Firstup, Unclemclovin, doublecross. I've played Tralee and Dooks and like both of them but TBH I hadnt though about Ballybunion or Tralee for this trip. No or very limited availability. Essentially Sept is the height of the US golf tourist season, so thats probably the reason. We are playing Dooks on Sunday and the time to get out and back is too tight.

doublecross, newtown90, dokgolf, Newcastle West and Castletown look like good options. Anyone like to comment as to which is better option?

I've played Castletroy a few times with work and the course is complete trash.

Assuming you leave airport bang on 1pm you have seven hours to get to killarney. It takes minimum 3 1/2 - 4 hours depending on traffic to drive to killarney. This just leaves you 3 - 3 1/2 hours to get to a course, change, set up clubs, pay green fees and play, and then get back n road.
Unless you have a buggy and course is quiet, it will be very difficult to get a full 18 in

OP why are driving through Limerick?, south Kerry and Killarney people usually drive through Mallow-Michelstown and then motorway all the way to Dublin.

    Has to be Newcastle West.

You'll be gone through Adare as early as possible. It's a fine course and I have always got a great welcome there. I think the green fee is very reasonable too.

I'm hoping to leave airport at 10:00 or 10:30

Why not go that way and play Mallow?

I'm not sure if this route would give you similar Adare-like headaches but you could take the M8 after Portlaoise and come into Killarney via Mallow. Not overly familiar with the courses on that route but I'm sure there are plenty.

Edit: Didn't see previous posts, go the Mallow route and you're opening up plenty of options.

Interesting, I've friends from Killarney and Dooks and they've never recommended this way. Have you driven it yourself?I'm a bit concerned that while I avoid a 40min delay in Adare, I get a 10 min delay in every town via mallow.

Just ST him and he says Mallow route works ok for Killarney, just not great for Dooks.

There isnt 1 town/village worth talking about traffic wise between Mallow and Killarney.

My south Kerry friends allways use the Limerick / Adare route too. Would agree with above posters regarding Newcastlewest and its on your route

Try Cahir Park GC,nice course, roughly half way between Dublin and Killarney using the M8 route. Very reasonable green fees.

You can bypass Adare fairly easily by heading out the Foynes road from Limerick (N69) and turning off for Croagh which will get you back on Killarney road (N21). It's 4km longer than travelling all the way on the N21.
    Then, you can play anywhere!

There're no delays going the Mallow route, coming from Dublin you take the Michelstown exit, and from there it's a straight run into Killarney through Mallow, it's the route I always take and everyone I know who lives in south Kerry takes this route, occasionally some people go through Cork city, I've rarely or ever heard of anyone from South Kerry going through Limerick.
Plus playing Beaufort is ideal as when you're finish your golf it's a short hop into Killarney for food and pints.

I'd recommend Newcastle West anyhow, lovely club where I started out and very welcoming and nice grub.

Havent played there in about a year now but was never that hard to get a tee time by Green Fees.

Drove to Killarney via the Mallow way last Sunday night after a bad day in Croke Park, some people might like that route but its not for me. Hard to pass out if you get caught behind anything.

Newcastlewest GC all the way. Lovely course, always in great condition and great value too. Think they do a green fee/food deal for 25e during the week. Was a member there myself a few years back. Breaks up the journey lovely as well.

Have to agree with Newcastlewest, can't go wrong, btw Castletroy is far from trash, lovely course.

Played Castletroy for this first time at the end of May, most enjoyable. I wouldn't hesitate in giving it a recommendation ⛳️.

Did you pay full green fee for it?

Played Castletroy last Wednesday, well impressed with the place.

Don't get the Newcastle West love though.

I'd steer clear of the mitchelstown mallow route. Pain in the hole getting caught behind grain trailers and lorries and whatnot.

just remember, wherever you play, you probably want to be teeing off by probably about 2:30 at the latest. If you get a sunny day, it might stay bright till about 7, but even then it gets hard to see the ball! If you get a cloudy day...... you probably want to be playing an hour earlier

Problem solved, they are flying directly to Kerry. By the time I pick them up @4pm drive 30 mins to Killarney and play 9 holes either in Killarny G&F Club or in Beaufort.

    Appreciate all the feedback.

Or you could get a helicoptor and play all 18.
