    Hi all,

Advice, currently work in kildare, decent job close to home.
Been offered à role 20k more but its in Dublin.
I am on higher tax as it is so it only makes about 800+ of à monthly difference.

    Is it worth it?

It would probably cost you that much to commute?

Not sure how you did your calcs but 20k a year works out about 800 net per month at the higher tax rate

    20000 * .48 = 9600 / 12 = 800

To me it would not be worth it, I wouldnt enjoy living in Dublin or a long commute and I personally work to live not live to work. Its a very personal choice and there is alot more than just money to weight up.

That's only something you can answer yourself

Lots of areas you haven't covered in your post.

How long will the commute be (in real life, not in an ideal world, and be honest in your calculations). If it is less than 1 hour, probably OK. If it is anymore, is it worth the hassle? Having said that. If you lived near a train, and it was an easy commute, it would make a difference. You could use that extra time to yourself to listen to podcasts, read books etc. Ideally, take a day off and test the commute.

How much do you need the extra money? If you are in a good job already and money is not a major motivator for you, then it may not be worth it.

Do you have family/kids who will see a lot less of you?

Any other external factors in your life that would be affected by the extra commute?

How much do you know about the new company?

Will you be working a lot of extra hours on top of your commute?

If you don't like the new job and end up leaving in a few months, are there any other employment opportunities?

Are you happy in your current job?
How secure is your current job?
Would a new job enhance future career prospects or potentially damage them?

I obviously don't expect you to answer these questions here, but just more items for you to consider.

Overall do you think taking up the job will lead to further promotion and better career progression more so than the job you're in now? If so and you're still young then it is absolutely worth it.

Obviously you will need to factor in higher rent costs if you want to move to Dublin or extra commute costs (and time) if you're planning on commuting from Kildare every day. Although when I worked in Dublin there was a girl in my office who got home quicker on the train from the city centre to Celbridge than another person who suffered a lengthy commute home in traffic to Rathfarnham! If you're thinking about the commute option then the tax saver rail ticket will probably still leave you with a saving of around €300.00 a month which is always good to have in the pot!

Career progression would be the biggest factor for me though.

I would take it , 200 bills a week take home extra is not to be sniffed at , that goes a long way to an amazing holiday or a super car or saving for a deposit.

Plus Dublin is awesome particularly if you have a few quid to enjoy it properly

I have actually done the commute before, north county Dublin to home on the train.
Night mare it was to be fair.

This role would be south county Dublin, option to work from home 1-2 days a week if needed. Also, it more out and about based so I manage my own diary and comings and goings really. As long as I am doing the business so to speak.

Money, not really my main motivating factor if I am honest, I mean and extra 700-800 a month would be good, but I suppose the extra fuel to go up and down. It would be offset a bit by travel mileage in work.

Progression, I am at a stage where I am good at what I do and somewhat well known at it. This would actually be something of new venture for me, so while I would imagine it would be good I am not 100% sure about the progression. There might be 1-2 levels up but beyond that not sure.

Commute at this stage is about 1 hour, but again traffic/crashes/rain/aliens etc would add it up no doubt.

Doing the math on it as a pure exercise, it would cost roughly 400 a month in Fuel extra to go up and down. maybe 450 by the time you factor in wear and tear on the car a month. It would no doubt mean that even if I leave Dublin at 16:45 a day which could be possible, traffic down to Kildare would be at least an hour, maybe hour and a half and sometimes longer. also means up an hour earlier to actually get there, so say it adds 10 hours a week for travel also, thats 40 hours a month for travel.

Not much left after that !!!!
