I had a quick question if anyone could help. A friend of mine is thinking of moving into rented accommodation with 2 other friends. My friend is currently unemployed and on job seekers, one of the his friends is as well and the other friend works full time. The rent for the place is €650 a month. Would the 2 people who are unemployed and not working be entitled to rent allowance and if so what would the rates be if the rent is €650 a month?

So one friend is living with his partner in a council house, the other lad is living at home with his parents and the other lad is working but living at home with his parents does that make a difference then?

You may get Rent Supplement if you have been living for 6 months (183 days) out of the last 12 months in one, or a combination, of the following:
    • Accommodation for homeless people.
    • Private rented accommodation. You can combine time living in more than one rented accommodation to satisfy the 6 months (183 days). You must be able to show that you could afford the rent at the beginning of your tenancy and that you could have continued to pay rent but are unable to do so because of a change in your circumstances which occurred after you started renting.
    • An institution, for example, a hospital, care home or place of detention.
    Or
Have been assessed by a local authority as being eligible for and in need of social housing in the last 12 months. If you don't have a housing need assessment, you must go to the local authority to have your housing need assessed. The local authority must be in the area that you intend to live and claim Rent Supplement. Only when you are assessed as eligible for and in need of housing can you apply for Rent Supplement. Rent Supplement is not payable while the local authority is carrying out a housing needs assessment

The people on jobseekers need to read this part

First off, to get rent allowance you must go on the housing list. The landlord of the new property must also be renting the rooms separately as opposed to a lease for the whole house seen as two of you will be applying for rent allowance and one paying normally.

Thanks for the quotes for the rent allowance here. From reading this is appears that the friend who lives in the council house would not qualify and the other person who lives at home wouldn't qualify either or maybe there is a chance if they both get assessed by local housing authority would that be the council to do this or another governing body?

So basically the housing list will mean you could be looking to get a council house out of it? And thats important to have each room leased out for the people to potentially get rent allowance?

Doesn't make sense if somebody is living in a local authority house that they would be looking for rent supplement else where
