I was wondering will Irish insurance companies insure a northern car if I'm living in the north? I'm from the Republic of Ireland and it would be cheaper getting insured in the republic as a named driver than in the north on my own name (18yo)

It is unlikely Southern companies will insure a Northern car, particularly if the driver is Southern.
You need a Nordie company to insure you. That's just the way it is.
Take the hit now and build NCB.
