    So Folks,

What do you think of the standard of movies in 2016 up to now ?

So far I have been very disappointed, actually walking out of cinema in Star Trek, first time I ever did this.

Maybe we were spoilt over the last 3 years ?

Anyway, what movies are you looking forward too for the rest of the year ?
I guess the star wars movie looks interesting to me ???

Would love to hear this forums opinions and recommendations for movies which might of slipped under the radar.

Julieta, Captain Fantastic and Hunt For The Wilderpeople are the next three things I'm looking forward to at the cinema. Also Don't Breathe looks like it could be good genre fun.

I haven't been paying enough attention to what's due out later in the year, other than Rob Zombie's 31 I can't think of anything offhand that I know is out soon. I have a list of sci-fi films that are out in the next six months somewhere, I should probably check that again sometime soon.

As for the year so far...it's been weak for summer movies, but then Mad Max: Fury Road was always going to be hard to follow, because it punched so far above Generic Blockbuster that just being entertaining at the time was always going to look bad in contrast...Neon Demon was good, albeit mental. Room was great, though kind of harrowing. Tale of Tales was gorgeous-looking and an interesting take on fairy tales. Deadpool, The Witch, Green Room, Nice Guys, and I'm sure a few more. There have been enough decent films out so far this year, I reckon, to be at least better than 2013 (which I found really dull).

Lemme see *googles "top movies 2016"*

ah, of course rotten tomatoes is top result...
    https://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/bestofrt/?year=2016

    Lemme see the top 10:
    1. Zootopia (2016) - Yes that was brilliant! Top movie.
    2. The Jungle Book (2016) - Yeah, was surprisingly good in its own way, especially considering I only watched the 1967 one like a month or so before it.
    3. Love & Friendship (2016) - Hasn't registered with me. Interesting, Must check it out.
    4. Hell or High Water (2016) - This stars Captain Kick (Chris Pine) and is written by the writer of Sicario and is getting good reviews. This I want to see.
    5. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) - Another that hasn't registered with me. Again.. Interesting, Must check it out.
    6. Finding Dory (2016) - Haven't seen Finding Nemo so gave it a miss. It's been getting such high reviews though that I'm thinking about watching both some evening when I get a chance.
    7. Sing Street (2016) - Yes. Brilliant Film. Contender for top film of the year. At first I saw the trailer and was like ... MEH.. then some guy on a Superhero Comics Channel on youtube argued for it against Captain America Civil War and some other superhero film and I was like... WUH? So I gave it a watch and thought it was really good.
    8. Captain America: Civil War (2016) - Did exactly what it said on the tin and did it well. Deserves to be in the top 10. Well done to the Russo Bros.
    9. Don't Think Twice (2016) - Third film that hasn't registered with me . Again.. Interesting, Must check it out.
    10. Embrace Of The Serpent (El Abrazo De La Serpiente) (2016) - Fourth film that hasn't registered with me . There's been so many films this year!!!!

Films from the remainder of the 100 that jump out as I scroll down:
    • The Nice Guys (2016)
    • 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
    • Green Room (2016)
    • Deadpool (2016)
    • Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)

I've seen reviews saying good things about:
    Ben-Hur
    The Witch

Films that jump out from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_in_film
    • Midnight Special
    • The Legend of Tarzan

Films that felt they did better than how much of a slating they got:
    • Star Trek Beyond (This film was solidly not absolutley CRAP and had some really good moments. Given my own low expectations going in.. I was happy afterwards)
    • Ghostbusters (fcuking asshats hating this film to obsurity before it came out meant even a crappy pun would make it an ok film for me. watching spy beforehand raised my expectations a bit too much though so it just gets a pass. That Holtzman scene though!)
    • The Huntsman: Winter's War (this coulda done decent enough if it hadn't gone up against Jungle Book and maybe released in a quieter month)
    • Warcraft (this did relatively well for a computer game adaption)

    Films that overpromised:
    • Suicide Squad (not terrible but promised too much and people wanted something to make up for BvS)
    • Batman Vs Superman (they literally cut actual plot from the film, fixed in Ultimate Edition but still had plot holes)

Film I'm kinda looking forward to:
    • Doctor Strange - Marvel/Disney are on a roll but this might not do it for them

Films I'm definitely looking forward to:
    • Star Wars - Rogue One
    • Arrival - (though I've this feeling that it might get considered a bit of a boring film but maybe has been directed enough not to be)

I need to think this through a bit better. Some things above definitely subject to change.

I think it's widely accepted that the Summer movie season this year has been the worst in a very, very long time. I certainly can't think of another one quite as awful.

Plenty of good films out there but the more mainstream multiplex offerings have been, generally speaking, lukewarm fare.

The summer blockbuster season is pretty f*cking tactically coordinated years in advance. This year was one of those years that it all went horribly wrong. Whether superheroes overall have became oversaturated remains to be seen, but the room for other cinematic universes of them outside of Marvel is looking weak. Star Trek as a brand is really not strong enough to sustain a new huge release every 2-3 years and its performance this year reflects that.

Next year might be a bit skewed too with the delay to Star Wars VIII (assuming tons of studios avoided having films out for next summer to avoid it), but ultimately this year will just have been a blip for blockbusters. Some changes will happen, probably not too many though.

Er you might want to go check again...this movie looks to be flop of the decade.

Always true: Even in a vintage year (like last year, which had like TWO really good franchise films!) the Hollywood scene will only ever count for a really, really limited spectrum of what's happening in cinema :)

As arbitrary as a year is for a measurement, it has been a reasonably slow few months for new releases, mainstream, obscure or otherwise. Still, there's been plenty of wonderful releases since January too (even if it reflects the inescapable lag in Ireland when it comes to world and independent releases)

The Assassin - Just a work of the most immense possible beauty and skill. Some scenes and shots are near miracles.

Arabian Nights - sprawling, uneven and frequently brilliant, this marathon trilogy is perhaps the finest piece of 'austerity' cinema we've had.

Anomalisa - Low-key Kaufman is still extraordinary.

Our Little Sister - the cinematic equivalent of a hug.

Son of Saul - flawed but utterly visceral and terrifying.

Cemetery of Splendour - splendour indeed. Up there with the best films Weerasethakul has made.

Happy Hour - this needs to escape distribution limbo, because this is such a thoughtful, intelligent and confidently acted portrait of four Japanese women undergoing their own individual crises.

Love & Friendship - frothy and very, very funny, and the great comedic performance of the year from Tom Bennett.

The Boy & The Beast - Another Mamoru Hosoda delight destined to not receive anywhere near the attention it deserves.

100 Yen Love - by far the finest of the recent spate of boxing films.

The Hateful Eight - IMO Tarantino's finest in a long time, and a big screen treat to boot.

Then there's The Witch, Embrace of the Serpent, 88:88, Behemoth, Knight of Cups, Everybody Wants Some... So yeah, even in a 'slow year' there's no shortage of stuff to delight :)

I was just thinking about posting a thread like this but I was reluctant because I expected a stream of people telling me there were more great films being made than ever, it was just that I didn't look in the right places.

This may be true, but on my own radar there has been very little of interest. Batman v Superman was a bit disappointing but the criticism for it was complete hyperbole, it wasn't as bad as it was made out to me. I still wouldn't mind watching the extended cut.

I was disappointed with the Nice Guys but I probably should have known better as recent Shane Black rubs me the wrong way. Apart from that Deadpool was excellent, Civil War was pretty dam good, X-Men Apocalypse was a big letdown from a franchise I am a fan of.

I'm struggling to think of much else that has caught my attention, though I have been meaning to take a look at Demolition with Jake Gyllenhaal and The Jungle Book, so I should probably look at those next.

I'm skipping Suicide Squad in the cinema, will just watch in my own time at home. The Animated Batman film the Killing Joke was straight to dvd but I very much enjoyed it.

Good catch. Just googled it. RT, IMDB and MC are either middling or very low ratings.

Very underwhelming blockbuster year at the cinema this year. The only movie I really enjoyed was the Jungle Book.

Batman v Superman, Captain America Civil War, Star Trek Beyond, Jason Bourne, Ghostbusters and now by most accounts Ben-Hur, were all duds. Haven't seen Suicide Squad yet, after BvS, not sure I want to. Hopefully, the new Star Wars movie at the end of the year improves things.

Spielberg used to be guaranteed to deliver a summer cracker either as director or producer, but he's been on the slide for a while and there's really nobody out there at the moment who can produce popcorn movies like Spielberg could at his peak.

Compare this year's summer movies to any year from the '80s and you can see how poor things have got. http://www.thegreat80s.com/Movies-of-the-80s.html

Blockbusters aside (as they generally don't appeal to me), I'm struggling to be enthusiastic about what's yet to be released this year and lukewarm on the 2016 releases I've seen so far. I was impressed by a small handful this year: The Neon Demon, Victoria, Midnight Special and The Witch. But not going to rush out to see them again. Caught my fair share at the other end of the spectrum. Linklater is hit and miss for me and Everybody Wants Some!! falls into the latter category (that'll teach me to believe the 'spiritual sequel' nonsense that I read about beforehand). Other disappointments from usually reliable directors included Hail, Caesar!, High-Rise and Anomalisa.

Still, I only tend to get into the swing of things in the last three months of the year so I'm keeping an eye out for the following:

    Voyage of Time
    Manchester by the Sea
    Certain Women
    Arrival
    The Phenom
    The Alchemist Cookbook
    Things to Come
    The Salesman
    Indignation
    Toni Erdmann
    Paterson
    The Handmaiden

"a perfect day" seems to have gone completely under the radar, and for me was a real joy to watch. one of the stand out movies of the year imo.

    zootopia was excellent.

really enjoyed "hail caesar" personally, and "the nice guys" also. both were class in their own way.

special mention has to go to "the lobster" as the bat**** crazy film of the year so far

I really found a lack of good films (or at least films that would interest me) at the Lighthouse or IFI over the past few months. I thought there would be good counter programming to Hollywood blockbusters or kids movies over the summer but I didn’t really see it. I’m looking forward to the next few months as autumn usually sees a much better choice of films.

Still lots of highlights this year from films that I knew I would like (The Hateful Eight, The Revenant, Youth) to films like Demolition, Hail Caesar! and Miles Ahead that I really enjoyed. I laughed all the way through the Coen Brothers movie.

Also I caught a few gems at the Dublin Film Festival that came out of left field like the kind of bonkers Nasty Baby and the previously mentioned 100 Yen Love, a real goose bump inducing Japanese boxing movie.

Ok, so MovieBobs 2016 Blockbuster list of 5 worst and 5 best:
    Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Lq5jj9x0M
    Article: http://www.geek.com/news/moviebob-reviews-the-best-and-worst-summer-movies-of-2016-1669337/

    Worst:
    5. Warcraft (I can understand many peoples views on this, I never played warcraft 1 but did play Warcraft 2 and 3. Hoping the film sequels build like the game sequels did).
    4. Alice through the Looking Glass (He says it's better than the first and I like how different it is as a universe so I might give this a go anyway)
    3. X-Men Apocalypse (Makes sense, it overpromised too much and did a MEH all over apocalypse, maybe if they called it X-Men: A decent Magneto interim story and Occasional gags with quicksilver while other stuff happens, I'd have been more ok with it)
    2. Independence Day: Resurgence (Yep, sold us on Independence day and Sold us well. Did not deliver. Coulda been a separate film if a bit more work was put in)
    1. Suicide Squad (Not sure I'd rank this the worst.. it had moments.. plus it introduced new DC stuff and delivered better than BvS.)

    Best:
    5. Pete's Dragon
    4. Kubo and the Two Strings
    3. Star Trek Beyond
    2. The Nice Guys
    1. The Neon Demon

For The Neon Demon, I read into what he says as: Don't look up why or it'll spoil the film. I was hesitant about seeing this film but now guessing maybe it's too easy to spoil for reviewers so they don't talk about it much and so not many people have seen it. Hrmmm. RT Audience: 63, critics 51. IMDB: 6.9/10. MC Audience: 7.5/10, critics 51. I'm thinking it's gonna be one that makes me think :)

His description of Pete's Dragon has sold me so now I really wanna see it.

I already wanted to see Kubo and the Two Strings as it's Laika animations 4th film and the 3 others (Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls ) were top quality:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laika_(company)

Aside: I've seen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. It wasn't half bad ya know. I don't think they undersold.

Been a strange year so far, it's probably been one of the worst years for Blockbusters especially this summer, with BVS, Suicide Squad, IDR been disappointing. Jason Bourne not been the classic I was hoping for. I loved Star Trek Beyond though. We had two great blockbusters in CACW and Deadpool but it's largely been disappointing year so far in the Blockbusting sense.

Ireland have released two of it's best films in ages this year in Sing Street and A Date for Mad Mary. The Nice Guys was a instant Cult Classic, along with The Neon Demon. Finding Dory was fine but Zootopia was great. Triple 9, The Witch, Midnight Special, Everybody Wants Some, Green Room were all great. Juileta and Son of Saul were both excellent.

It's been fine in 2016 but nothing amazing has jumped out yet. I can't honestly say I have a film that is dead cert for my top spot yet.

    Anything but

I mean, I thought it was ****ing awful but I don't even mean that as a criticism in and of itself. The film isn't especially deep. If you don't like it after watching it, having a bit of a think about it isn't going to help the cause.

One other thing to bear in mind about this summer: distributors were probably extra cautious due to the Euros and Olympics. Those are 'stay at home' draws during an already tough season for anything that isn't a blockbuster (and maybe even for blockbusters these days). There was obviously a few sleeper hits and audacious choices out there - there has to be some counter-programming! - but it's no surprise that the bigger name indie and foreign films have been held back until normal service resumed.
    Anything but

Yep, and I'd go as far as saying it was vapid and dumb on purpose. It's just empty provocation as usual from Refn IMO, but he's very clearly attempting to articulate and critique the shallowness of the modelling industry and 'beauty' in general. I'm never quite sure how aware he himself is of how much his films deserve and invite similar criticisms :pac:

    Yep

Eh.. I'd say I hadn't a clue it was by Refn. My jaw is just about recovered from hitting the floor

Some bits took some understanding, the modelling world and all that.
    The shock I got though

I thought this was gonna be scifi or supernatural or something..

like maybe with a demon! Straight up horror though.

The Conjuring 2 - Really good, lived up to expectations
War Dogs - I didn't know what to expect but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Money Monsters - Awful. I thought it would be great, but it was such a let down.
Now You See me 2 - Favorite film this year. Funny and really welled filmed.

Oh yeah, I was implying the same there really.

I'd say he is aware of those aspects in this case at least, but that doesn't really make it any less shallow, just allows him to shield himself from some of the criticism.
It fails spectacularly imo regardless. A film with its premise imo nearly needs a legit creep (who has some self awareness that their a leering creep) to be making it so the audience can actively feel uneasy about how the lead character is being treated (both by the other people in it and the camera). Elle Fanning's character didn't work at all the way they had it done.
Basically the whole f*cking thing struck me as Refn trying to make bold statements but covering his arse every time he could from doing anything that might actually disturb his audience.

Classic, best of decade movies: Green Room, Hateful Eight, Hail Caesar!

Good movies that are well worth a watch: Everybody Wants Some, The Nice Guys, Deadpool, Triple 9, Midnight Special

Bollocks bad movies: Neon Demon, Anomalisa, Ghostbusters, David Brent: Life on the Road, Suicide Squad, The Lobster

Everything else I've seen has been to some degree watchable.

I think actually most movies fall into the OK category but on the internet that doesn't really translate. Everything is either best movie ever or worst movie ever.

I think this year has been OK for the most part. It probably feels like a disappointment because some of the big releases had big build ups hype wise and then didn't deliver to the extent of expectations in relation to that hype.

Also the Euros and Olympics always takes a few eyes away from cinema so maybe that has something to do with the lackluster blockbuster season.
