Dog DNA Test

Saw the other thread about identifying dog breeds and thought I'd post up our experience of using a dog DNA test. Yes, it's probably the height of pointless luxury purchases but the gf absolutely adores her rescue dog and just wanted her curiosities sated. Process is simple, you take 2 swabs from the dogs mouth and post it off. Results take about 2-3 weeks. Costs £60.

We knew Penny was definitely part cavalier. Otherwise we thought there was going to be a little bit of terrier in her as she is very territorial, loves chasing cats, squirrels etc and does the terrier thing of "worrying" i.e. shaking her toys vigorously when trying to "kill" them. Looking at her face and petite size we thought there might be Chihuahua as well and her personality matches them a little too. She weighs 4.2kg which is a good kilo and a half below the cavalier standard as well.

Anyway, I'll leave some photos here for you all to try and guess and then you can see the results by clicking the links below.

The results were a bit of a surprise but reasonably close to what we expected. Just one curveball in there.

Hmmmm... All the terriers listed, with the exception of the jrt, are really quite rare in Ireland (assuming she's an Irish dog!) so it's a bit of a stretch to believe they're in her make-up, bar residual relationships that you'd have expected from the interbreeding and creation of those breeds a century or two ago!
I'll tell you another breed she reminded me of (and yes, the Cav is clear in her, the Chihuahua I couldn't disagree with either), but maybe instead of/along with Chihuahua, might there be Papillon?
    She is seriously cute :)

Can see the Papillion resemblance in her alright but there's very few of those in Derry so we thought that'd be unlikely. Loads of jrts in Derry though.

Is she a Derry-conceived dog? I can't speak for Derry, but I know loooads of Papillon owners in the north!

No idea tbh. She was confiscated by the cops from a drug dealer's backyard in a pretty rough area of town. The vets nearby only have a couple of Papillions on their books anyway though.

You can draw no conclusions about where she's actually from so, the lack of Papillons in your locality most likely bears no relation to the likelihood of the breed (or any other) being involved in her parentage! Most of the terrier breeds listed are rare across ireland, but Papillons certainly aren't rare ireland-wide :)

Who did this test for you?

To be honest it sounds like a scam to me and you should be careful.

Some dog genetics "expert" puts up ad and starts sending cheap swab kits from ebay. Dog owner takes the bait and sends back swabs. Swabs go in the bin and said "expert" sends back a letter with some fairy story about the dog's genetic makeup.
    Beware.

Be interesting to send them back a swab of your ring and see what dog breed they tell you you are.

I find this highly suspect and targetting of people which more free time and money than sense.

I see a few Papillion walked on the beach near me and you can spot them a mile off (well at least 100m away which is as near as I go with my monster dogs) and Penny looks very similar. Obviously the feathering on the ears isn't as exaggerated but the tail is about right.

One look at that dog and her size/weight and I am gonna say Cavalier & Papillion. I'm a terrier person & I don't see any of those terriers in her.

My aunts Poodle shakes her toys too like a terrier but when you see an actual terrier absolutely distroying their toys you will see the big difference.

Whatever she is, she is very cute.
