Looks nice, which GPU brand did you get? Hopefully not a reference one.

Did you look at building it yourself, not sure how much you paid for this but it would probably have worked out cheaper.

    Anyways, good luck with it.
    :)

Just make sure they install Windows to the M2 SSD!

I just ordered it, it will be a while until I know what GPU brand it is, but I heard that PCS are providing either Palit or Zotac.
I didn't want to build it myself, I wanted something well tested and with good warranty.

I initially wanted to pick slightly different parts, but this particular configuration, as is, comes with a discount of about £300. With silver warranty, shipping to Ireland, it cost me £1560. See this page, it's the Define X1 (4th from the top).

I'm pretty sure they know to put the OS on the SSD, I wouldn't presume to give advice to "specialists".

Still looking at monitors, and I've no idea what to get, without spending too much on it. I'm completely out of touch with computer gaming these days, last time I bought a video card I think it was a Creative Video Blaster. As such, terms like IPS, TF panel, G-sync, are completely alien to me. I'd like something around the 500 euro mark, maybe even a little more, but something to go well with the GTX 1080!

IPS = best quality you can get out of an LCD panel without spending silly money. VA is nearly as good, TN a distant 3rd.
However TN have a more mature market for high-refresh panels.

With a GTX 1080, I'd say look for 1440p resolution and anything above 60Hz.

G-Sync would be a bonus but nothing more IMO.

    Hey Joypad,

Let me know how you get on with this, seriously thinking about getting one too! It's right along the lines of what I was thinking of building myself..

One curious thing though, when you go to the "configure option" instead of the "Order" and just go to buy without changing the configuration it gives the message:

The motherboard you have selected is not compatible with Savage 3000MHz memory.

Please select an alternative motherboard or memory option.

Not sure if the Asus Z170 can't handle the 3000Mh (it has no problem when you order the 2666Mhz) or why the message is popping up seen as they send out the 3000Mhz in the standard build..

Edit: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING/specifications/ looks like there should be no problem, bug on the site I guess.

It's not gone into production yet, and I expect they will call about the memory, like they did with these people here.
Apparently there have been issues with the Savage 3000 chips and they are replacing them with Corsair Vengeance 3000.

From what you're saying, they have noted in their configurator the incompatibility, but they have not yet updated the Define X1 structure yet.

Speaking of changes in the Define X1's structure, one thing to note is that the M.2 SSD drive used to be, as is in the review, the 256GB Samsung with insane speeds, but they changed it to this Kingston 480GB, which is bigger, but slower. Personally, I think the size difference is more important, as the SSD speeds are high anyway, and I don't think it makes that much of a difference.

For some first impressions, have a look at this thread.

Finally, a quick update on the monitor situation: I've ordered yesterday a Dell S2716DG. It was basically, the best monitor that fit at the top limit of my budget :(

I'm delighted with the dell S2716DG I got a couple of weeks ago. I haven't been able to properly put it through its paces yet as I won't be building the PC for a month or two but the Xbox looks amazing on it compared to my 5 or 6 year old HD ready finlux tv it replaced :pac:

Ah cool that makes sense.. Yeah i'd be the same and would prefer the 480Gb size even if a bit slower.

Delivered today. No idea how to test it, as the gaming rig has not yet gone into production. It will have to wait in its box for a few more weeks :(

Try the Xbox on it, you'll still be able to see any defects in the screen or anything and make sure it's in good condition.

Joypad, how did you get on with this? I'm expecting mine to arrive next week, some delays with stock but thankfully sorted and being built now. All working ok for you??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,704 ✭✭✭JoyPad

The PC has arrived, and it looks great. I've run a few benchmarks, and it scores very high, as you would expect.
I played a bit of Forza Motorsport Apex on it, and it runs great. Looks much better than FM6 on XB1, and does a constant 60fps.

But it's now back in the box, as Forza Horizon 3 has arrived, and I've no time for PC games!
The PC is a present for my 12yo son, soon to be 13!

P.S. The GTX1080 is the Zotac Founders Edition. Also, the power supply has 750W in large letters on it. I guess they switched it because of supply shortage.

    Some test results:
    TimeSpy
    FireStrike

If you got FH3 digitally you should have it on the PC too I think, pretty sure there's a way to unlock the fps also.

What RAM did you end up getting, I see Kingston DDR4 3000Mhz in the tests, did they make you change the HyperX Savage? I had to change out the Z170 Pro Gaming for the Z170-E due to compatibility issues with the 3000Mhz ram..

The game is bought on my account, and I was able to download and test a bit on the new PC. However, the PC is not for me, is for the son. With his account logged on the PC, he can't see the game. A visit to the store indicates he would need a separate purchase to get it.

Even if there's a workaround for this issue, I'm not too eager to do it. Son is not into Forza, he's into shooters and Minecraft, so I'll get him set up with his games on his PC, and leave Forza to XB1.

They didn't ask, simply put in it the RAM you see on the test results page.

And ready for VR. He's been nagging us for a Vive since it was launched, but since he needed a VR capable PC, he gets this first. And then, we'll see what VR thingie to get, etc...
