Can anyone advise as to the best option for a 1983 BMW classic...
The underside needs to be cleaned and re-painted, there is no real damage to bodywork but the car has not being used for a few years so the protection on the chassis has rusted underneath and the original thick coating is coming off...

if there is rust it must be removed to preserve the car. Topical rust treatments give a false sense of security in my humble. They only convert the rust on the very uppermost layer, leaving the rest to fester beneath. They'll slow the progress yes, but getting back to bare metal is the way to go for longevity. Then coat said bare metal with high zinc primer, followed by body paint. You can then reapply the factory type underseal. I'd top that off with an anti rust wax across the underside of the car. That's a yearly kinda deal, but gives you the chance to keep an eye on the hidden parts of the car for the dreaded rust and other wear items like bushings etc.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I usually just slap on red oxide paint with a brush. I have heaps of tins of it for the roof of me sheds. Tis a grand job on the tractor and trailers. And the roofs of the sheds.

Eye it is. The hippies would say that it's awful stuff, but as long as your not ating it then is grand. I've still have a good few tins from years back. It lasts for years. It's the proper stuff for metal. Me shed?!! Well horse, that will remain a secret as I don't want ye eating me paint!!
