Seai Registered plumber came to price for heating control upgrade. He said I can put a new clock with switches to turn off either upstairs or downstairs, or both for hot water only in summer but said I won't get the grant because I also have a boiler stove and its to do with safety and not having the ability to close off the stove circuit.

Very good plumber and fitted the stove and plumbed the house originally.

Anyone know why the grant would exclude this ?

Looking at that there shouldnt be a problem but you would need to get it checked by someone else. As long as both work independently of one another. Done a boiler and controls upgrade recently on a house with solid fuel stove and works perfectly

Its an external immersion heater. A bit like the Willis one.

All the rads have trvs already and since we had the stove installed we rarely use the oil and the upstairs rads are usually off anyway as the house is small and the insulation is pretty good since we upgraded that too, so the house is warm enough just using the downstairs, unless it's really cold outside.
From what the plumber tells me it wouldn't cost a huge amount to fit 2 motorised valves and a new clock to be able to select upstairs, downstairs or hot water only for the oil. We do that already but have to physically close the valves ourselves. I'll see what he comes back with.

On a side note, should all that hot press pipework be insulated ?

Does your plumber understand what's going on or what's required to satisfy seai requirements? First he said it can't be done and now it's a simple job?

What he said was it is a simple job to replace the 2 manual valves with electric ones and fit a new clock timer. No other work

taken from building regs part L.TGDs for existing buildings

2.2.4.4 The hot pipes connected to hot water
storage vessels, including the vent pipe and
the primary flow and return to the heat
exchanger, where fitted, should be insulated
to the standard outlined in paragraph 2.2.4.3
above, for at least one metre from their point
    of connection.
