Bought TV in Norn. Won't pick up Saorview down here. Options?

I bought a Sony Bravia in Newry, but all the programmes are 'scrambled or can't be decoded'. Have I any options to fix it, or do I need to get SKy multi-room or something? We have a Sky box in another room, so a second box is only a tenner a month.

Is it a new TV? I'd be surprised if it didn't work.

Have you a TV aerial plugged into it?

So it has a satellite tuner & you've hooked it up to a satellite dish that was/is in use for Sky? It should get the free-to-air channels (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, 5 etc.)

Irish channels aren't free-to-air from this satellite, & Saorview is a terrestrial service, for which you'll need an aerial.

Ah yes, that would explain the "scrambled" message when trying to watch RTE.

Are you connecting to an aerial?

It's not hooked up to a sky dish, it's co-axial cable, you know, the old cablelink.

    It's brand new btw.

Saorview needs an aerial to receive the channels, either on the roof or depending where you live you might get away with an indoor aerial.

Doubt the old cablelink aerial will work. Does the tv have Freeview HD? That is the only way you will get Saorview channel on it.

Could you post the model number, please?

Would you ever get back to 2010 with this 'Freeview HD' stuff? Any new or recent Sony will work with Saorview.

Is there an issue with it being bought in the North?

None whatsoever. You just need an aerial for Saorview, you won't get it from the cable TV system.

Do you know if it has a satellite tuner, as that would get you the free UK channels, provided it's hooked up to a suitable dish. Saorview is just RTE, TV3, TG4, & UTV Ireland.

    Ah the perfect expert:rolleyes:

Just appreciate that not every purchaser is 100% sure of what they are getting in technical equipment. And its very likely that the personnel in the Newry shop may never have heard of Saorview.

I don't even know if we had Saorview before, but basically on our old telly (5 year-old Samsung), plugging the co-axial cable in to the telly got you the basic 17 or so channels. BBC, C4, UTV, RTE etc etc. Why can't we now get them on the new one?

Not Saorview, but analogue cable. You'll need to look for analogue channels if you want those back.

But I thought everything was digital now?

There should be a tuning option to switch from digital to analogue, have a look at your manual.

As Thurston says you will have to do an analogue scan. Previous Sony TV remotes had analogue and digital select buttons to select between the 2 tuner types.

See here, something like this with Digital/Analogue button over the number 1, then rerun search...

Have you changed the country from Uk to Ireland in the settings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭Koloman

Maybe the TV has no analogue tuner to receive the analogue cable.

Pan European manufacturers like Sony will most likely continue to produce TVs with analogue tuners for countries that continue have analogue cable systems

Analogue terrestrial and satellite are gone, but analogue cable still exists in some areas.

If the Country= is set to Country=UK then there will be no VHF analogue. You must set the TV to Country=Ireland in the setup for the TV to tune in VHF analogue which will allow you to receive the NTL cable channels.
