Im booked in to see doctor thursday about this but wanted to know if anyone has had a similar prob:

Ive had this niggly dull sensation on the down swing right under my left arm about 5 ribs down that has turned into down right painful when swing, gave it 8 days rest, went out saturday, was not too bad but went out and did 9 holes today, and was very painful on back swing and down swing to the point i could only manage 2 points on stableford (id normally manage 14-18) as i was anticipating the pain when swinging.

anyone heard of this rib pain before as its not the usual shoulder/wrist/lower back pain that i would of thought the most common overuse injuries.
p.s. i had a good lesson 3 weeks ago and he had me work on my balance and posture, and my swing improved dramatically overnight, now im so demoralised as i cant hit a 6 iron 100 yards!

There are muscles down your side over your ribs. You can usually feel them at work if you hold a 3-5Kg weight in your fully extended arm at about shoulder level. Raise to shoulder level and lower to hip a few times and you probably will feel it. If that's what's damaged, the exercise I'm describing will really hurt. If that is the case, the exercise as described will strengthen those muscles.

You have intercostal muscles between your ribs.
Sounds like a soft tissue injury to me and I'd advise not bothering with the doctor and just going to a physio.
The doctor won't do anything but give you pain killed and tell you to rest because let's be honest that's all doctors do but a sports physio will attack the exact problem and treat the injury
