If you were to get suregery done in the uk for a long term illness (that has no option available in ireland), would the irish NHS cover it, or would you need a private insurance aborad application to cover it?

I have no experience of using cross border facilities - I do know they are available for certain illnesses/procedures - so I think your best advice will be asking your GP or Consultant.
    Good luck x

I'm with Failinis on this, i know there was a national treatment purchase fund for some surgeries in the recent past but start with your gp to ask.

Hi. I'm 3 weeks after surgery in SVK. This surgery was available in Ireland, but there was long waiting time, nearly 1 year and it could be turned into the cancer or I could choke... I contacted cross board scheme. At beginning I went to GP, she refered me for scan. Scan came back, she referred me to surgeon. He saw me luckily after 3 months and put me on waiting list, which is long at present. I contacted cross board scheme (HSE scheme) and I was told, I need to fill in form with consultant abroad. So I traveled abroad, filled in papers, came back, send papers to them and was waiting about 20 days for their reply if they will pay me back my money for surgery in SVK. (Yes, you have to pay upfront and they pay you back withing 30 days ). I've got YES, so I'm after surgery now and I sent Invoice with pro-forma invoice to them and waiting for payment now... I hope this helps you, if you have any question feel free to ask me, but my surgery was available within state, not sure about your condition...
