Microchip certificate

Hi all, just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me. Both our dogs were microchipped before the new law came in. One of the dogs chip was registered to Fido. I had to apply for a certificate for him as he was chipped before the law came in. I received this today. Our other dog is IKC registered so I'm wondering if I need to apply to them for a certificate also or will her papers serve the same purpose?

Both mine are IKC reg and I got certs for both of them. I wasn't going to but they're with my mum during the day and she quite rightly pointed out that the dogs (Bailey especially) mightn't be comfortable with stranger at the door scanning them for a chip and she wouldn't be comfortable letting somebody do it so €10 spent and certs up in the press with their licenses.

Thanks I wasn't sure whether the actual ownership cert would cover of if I had to apply for the microchip one also. I'm sure Bella wouldn't mind any one scanning her if it meant she got a pet but I'd rather have it all together just to be sure.

You must have a "Certificate of Microchipping" if you own a dog in Ireland.
If you're checked, the wardens/authorised officers will not be scanning your dog to check... They specifically want to see the paperwork that proves the dog is chipped, and owners are legally obliged to have this Certificate of Microchipping, and to produce it on request.
No other paperwork will suffice, it must be a Certificate of Microchipping, and these can only be issued by the appointed database companies, which include Fido, and Animark, and IKC-Animark.
I haven't dealt with either Animark or IKC-Animark yet on getting a Certificate of Microchipping issued, but Fido will issue them for all dogs. They charge €4.50 if your dog's chip is already registered with them. They charge (I think) €20 if it's not.
Here's the website that'll get you started on the process...

I think you can print them yourselves when you register online. I also think the IKC chip only links the dog to the breeder. So if you haven't registered the dog to you and he/she gets lost there's NO WAY he will find his way back home. registering the MC is not a hassle- it's absolute paramount to the dogs safety.

The IKC chip is just like any other... The breeder gets it implanted prior to selling the pups, and is meant to register the pups to their own name, but many wait until they've owners for the pups and let the owners do the paperwork... This is precisely the same process as Fido use, and no matter what the chip company, is open to people not bothering to register the chip in their name.
The new legislation in theory *should* tighten up on this. But just to clarify, operationally there is no difference between an IKC chip and a Fido chip... Neither will trace the dog's owner if the owner hasn't registered the dog.

Also, to the best of my knowledge, you cannot print your Certificate of Microchipping off yourself. It is, essentially, a logbook for the dog (including a change of ownership section) and just like the car's logbook, it is an official document with embossed stamps/writing etc which must be produced in its original form when requested. You can certainly apply for it online, but once the database staff have checked the details are correct, and the fee is paid, the cert is sent out in the post.

Fully agree.it's the registering part with microchipping that is paramount for the dogs safety. I have printed my cert directly from the fido site when I registered my lurcher. The dogwarden accepted it. I am not 100% sure though if you can actually re-print it at a later date other than when registering

That's odd... It specifically says on their website that they'll post it to you, and having registered and re-registered a good few dogs under the new legislation which means I need to talk to the Fido lads a lot, they never mentioned that I could print off the Certs! It'd be a lot handier!

Looked into FAQ and came across this:
Unless you have received the official certificate from Fido, you are not compliant. Up to now, Fido only issued its own Certificates of Registration to show that reunification data had been registered with Fido. With the introduction of the new government Regulations, and Fido's recognition as a government approved Database, Fido now has to issue new Certificates that confirm the chip, dog, owner and implanter details.

think Thats what you're referring to. I wasn't even aware of it, not sure my dog warden is. My cert shows everything except implanter details (only the name of the vet but nothing further).:confused:

Why do they have the self-print ones then? Weird.
Unless they mean they don't look the same? Though the gist of what they say is that the posted cert is the legally accepted one?
I dunno... All these complications! I wonder what the take-up rate has been. I know of a fair few people who will never chip their dogs, let alone certify them. They either don't know about it, don't care about it, or aren't worried about being asked for it.

My cert looks very different in lay out

HATE HATE HATE that. The microchip and registration is for the safety of the dog, not a hassle to the owner. IMHO if you don't MC your animal(s) -even my cats are Microchipped and registered (and I REALLY need my password back)than I don't think you really care about your animal getting lost. maddening. Bah. Sorry it's off topic.

Thank you, yes I got our JRTx one from Fido last week but I was unsure about the IKC one. I'll contact them about getting Bella's one.

I have changed the registration from the breeder to myself and have that paperwork.

Just be aware that you can get IKC chips certified by Fido, it just costs more. Fido seem to be more on the ball with getting Certs out to people.

Thanks I didn't realise that now. Yea I applied on a Friday evening and had it by the following Wednesday. Easy enough to do. I hadn't realised about having the certificates, when the law was coming in I wasn't really paying a whole lot of attention as I thought sure both ours are chipped! Felt a bit silly when I read it somewhere a few weeks back.

Nothing to feel silly about... I'd say there are thousands of owners who think the same :)
