Especially with the pistols there was a lot of "these fellas can't even play their instruments". Yeah they could. Just not like the prog/cock/rock that was popular at the time.

Might not be your cup of tea but they can play.

    Any favourite punk bands ?

AIB or BOI are probably my favourite punk banks

Tony Banks could certainly play keyboards, but he wasn't a punk and was allegedly a bit tight with the old spondulicks...like most banks.

Greg Ginn of Black Flag is one of the best guitar players ever. Not for being technically proficient on the instrument, but for making his guitar sound like it was going to cut you in half.

Nofx are pretty talent guys, Rancid not bad bass player is unreal. Exploited guitarist, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat (that speed isn't easy), Millions of Dead Cops, Stiff Little Fingers could play.

Then there's a ton of bands who don't put mad stylish stuff out but the riffs are amazing. Filaments, King Prawn, Time Again, Misfits, Anti Flag, Black Flag, Crass , Flux of Pink Indians, Gg Allen and the Murder Junkies, Conflict and so on.

Circle Jerks, Spembirds, Toxic Reasons, DOA, Broken Bones, English Dogs, Abrasive Wheels, Partisans...I could go on but far too many to mention.

    Can't play, won't play....

Matlock, Jones and Cook could all play.
Whether Johnny boy could sing is another thing...as for Sid...bless.

    The Stranglers could play .

But lets stick to the stereotype

It's not easy to play at speed..whole EP was recorded in 15 mins, though Id probably class this as early 80's hardcore

Jet Black The Stranglers drummer was 78 years old the other day!!!

Punk Banks Can't Play....seems ironic that some posters cannot play the keyboard either.

Haha I've only just noticed the typo in the thread title now.

I'd imagine a punk bank would let you take as much money as you want.

John Lydon joked about the Pistols playing better after the comeback & he was right. I saw them in London years ago & they were amazing but musically rough.

They were excellent at Electric Picnic years later even though it's funny to see them singing lyrics that were written in Thatcher's time.

To their credit Never Mind the Bollocks has become a must have, even now.

I think mostly the 'punk bands can't play' thing came after the success of the first wave. They played well but with simple structures...none of yer fancy wanker weird time signatures, and this made it easy to join in for people who had little talent.

Any idiot can play a few power chords and shout stuff, but writing and performing (and having the real conviction) like Rotten etc. is another thing. Jones is a wonderful guitar player with great riffs (credit to Matlock there too), and Cook was very decent.

There is good punk, and a loooot of crap punk.

The Exploited drummer, Danny Heatley, toured with Shane MacGowan and the Popes for about 6 years. He played on two albums with them. The Snake and The Crock of God. Fine drummer and top bloke.

Yeah, only mentioned Big John because he put some nice guitar work on the albums he was on, while Danny wasn't throwing great stuff out.

Like I said, there were tons of talented guys but they blast out some great riffs and licks, beats and bass lines without **** their instruments.

I was into metal for a long time and still listen to a bit, especially bands from around 95 who were using build up rather than solos bit I cringe everytime I hear **** guitar now.

Punk was different for me. It was still aggressive music but for the most part there is a lot less showy sh1t going on with it which I like.

I could listen to a few punk songs here and there, would not be my cuppa in general.
